Its official title is Dune: Part Three; it is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah and is scheduled to reach North American theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026. International releases are set to begin December 16, 2026. Those are announced dates and could change.
What is Dune 3 officially called?
The official title is Dune: Part Three, though audiences often call it Dune 3 or Dune: Messiah. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present the film, which Villeneuve directs and co-wrote with Brian K. Vaughan. The official film site identifies Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah as its source material. That confirms the book is the basis for the adaptation, not that the movie will reproduce every element of the novel.

What is the story about?
The official synopsis places the story nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. It says Paul faces the consequences of his reign amid new threats, betrayal, and a conspiracy involving Chani. The synopsis establishes the film’s broad setup; it does not disclose the complete plot or confirm how closely particular scenes follow Herbert’s novel.
Villeneuve described the movie as a “thriller” that is “more intense and definitely more emotional” than the earlier films, according to the Associated Press after CinemaCon in April 2026. AP also reported that attendees at the event saw the first seven minutes. Those comments describe Villeneuve’s characterization at that event, not an independent assessment of the finished film. Is this Villeneuve’s last Dune movie?
Villeneuve said in a TIME interview published March 1, 2024, “Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me.” That was his stated intention at the time, not a guarantee about future studio plans or the franchise. It is best understood as his personal view of where his own Dune film arc might end. Read the TIME interview coverage.
