Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc becomes more purposeful in episode 3, “Fully Recovered Tanjiro Joins the Hashira Training!!” Tanjiro’s arrival turns the arc’s training premise into visible work: stamina drills under retired Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui, an unexpected nighttime test, and a handoff to Muichiro Tokito. The episode’s opening stretch may feel slow in the context of the arc’s setup, but this installment finally gives that setup a physical shape.

What happens in episode 3

Spoilers below.

Recovered from his injuries, Tanjiro joins the Corps’ Hashira Training and begins with Tengen Uzui. The retired Sound Hashira puts trainees through uphill running and obstacle exercises, with meals alongside Uzui’s wives providing a communal pause between bouts of exertion. The official episode recap presents the work as stamina-building rather than a flashy display of sword techniques.

At night, Uzui turns the training into a combat drill, attacking trainees from concealment. Tanjiro manages to parry Uzui’s wooden sword. His success matters less as a victory than as a glimpse of what the exhausted trainees are trying to achieve: Tanjiro’s strength and encouragement give them a concrete example to follow. The sequence also shifts the mood from camaraderie and conditioning toward the danger the Corps must prepare to face. A shadowy, eyeball-bearing demonic hand following Corps members adds an unsettling note. The episode ends with Tanjiro moving on to the next stage, led by Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito.

Does the episode shake off the arc’s slow start?

That depends on what a viewer wanted from the opening. The CBR review syndicated on IMDb described episode 3 as finally reaching the training focus after “tons of deliberation, exposition and delays.” That is one critic’s pacing judgment, not a consensus verdict. Still, the episode does make a noticeable structural change: instead of primarily setting up the training, it shows Tanjiro and the other Corps members doing it.

The exercises are deliberately repetitive and practical. Uphill running and obstacles establish the physical grind; the nighttime drill tests how trainees respond when they cannot simply see an opponent coming. In that sense, the episode gives the arc’s broad premise a useful progression: work, test, then move to another Hashira’s specialty. Its forward motion comes from this change in activity, not from resolving the larger conflict.

Tanjiro’s role makes the training feel communal

Tanjiro is not presented as a trainee who blends into the group. He handles Uzui’s test well, but the more interesting effect is on the people around him. His upbeat presence and visible capability offer tired trainees a reason to believe the work can lead somewhere. This makes his confidence serve the ensemble rather than turning the exercise into a simple showcase of his strength.

The contrast also gives the physical routine emotional texture. Other trainees struggle through the same demands; Tanjiro’s example helps connect their individual exhaustion to a shared goal. The episode is at its most effective when it treats training as both conditioning and morale-building.

The nighttime drill adds a needed edge

Uzui’s concealed attack is the installment’s sharpest tonal turn. The earlier drills and meals create a sense of routine and fellowship, while the night exercise makes the trainees react under pressure. Tanjiro’s successful parry gives the test a small payoff without making the training feel complete: he is capable, but he is still moving through a sequence of instruction, with another Hashira waiting ahead.

The demonic hand in the shadows complicates that transition. It suggests that the Corps’ preparation is not merely an athletic interlude, even as the episode keeps the immediate focus on training. Crunchyroll’s seasonal lineup frames the arc as preparation for the coming confrontation with Muzan Kibutsuji; this episode makes that purpose tangible through the trainees’ physical tests and the hint of danger beyond them.

Verdict

Episode 3 is a more engaging installment once Tanjiro joins the training, because it replaces some of the arc’s setup with action that has a clear function. The conditioning drills ground the premise, Tanjiro’s ease becomes encouragement for the group, and Uzui’s nighttime test adds tension before the transition to Muichiro. It does not erase the slower lead-in for viewers who found the earlier setup overextended, but it gives the arc a welcome sense of direction.
