What the Demon Slayer Mark means
The mark is a rare manifestation associated with extreme combat circumstances and enhanced capability, not a prize granted for rank or ordinary training. A secondary chapter summary attributes activation thresholds to Tanjiro of a heart rate above 200 beats per minute and a body temperature above 39°C. Because that account is not the manga itself, those exact figures should be treated cautiously rather than as settled wording from the primary text.
The count depends on what “got” means. Seven characters awaken marks during the story; including Yoriichi, who is described as having been born with one, makes eight marked characters in all.
Which Demon Slayer characters awakened a mark?
The following seven awaken marks during the manga. Their appearances are tied to high-stakes battles, not a formal promotion or a routine milestone.

Tanjiro Kamado
The story’s central swordsman first manifests his mark during the fight against Gyutaro in the Entertainment District. Its appearance develops over the course of the story, making Tanjiro the clearest example of a mark emerging amid a desperate battle.
Muichiro Tokito
The Mist Hashira awakens his mark during the Swordsmith Village battle against Gyokko. His transformation comes as he is pushed into a life-threatening fight.
Mitsuri Kanroji
The Love Hashira manifests her mark during the Swordsmith Village attack, while fighting Hantengu’s manifestations. Her awakening occurs amid the same crisis that brings Muichiro’s mark into view.
Gyomei Himejima
The Stone Hashira awakens his mark during the final battles against Muzan Kibutsuji. His case shows that the phenomenon is not limited to younger fighters or to the earlier Swordsmith Village conflict.

Sanemi Shinazugawa
The Wind Hashira manifests a mark in the final confrontation with Muzan. His appearance belongs to the late-series sequence of marked Hashira facing the greatest threat to the Corps.
Giyu Tomioka
The Water Hashira awakens his mark during his battle with Akaza. The event places him among the Hashira whose mark appears under extreme pressure in the final arc.
Obanai Iguro
The Serpent Hashira manifests his mark in the fight against Muzan. Like the other late-series awakenings, it occurs during the Corps’ decisive struggle rather than as a consequence of rank alone.
Why Yoriichi is a different case
Yoriichi Tsugikuni should be counted separately from those seven awakenings: the story describes him as born with the mark. Calling him someone who “awakened” it would blur an important distinction between a mark present from birth and one that appears later under extreme conditions.

Which Hashira or other characters should have awakened a mark?
This is a counterfactual list, not a claim about manga canon. The picks use four considerations: demonstrated combat ability, exposure to life-threatening fights, importance to the story, and whether a mark would fit the risks the series attaches to the phenomenon. A close fight or strong fighter does not automatically prove that a character would have awakened one.
Kyojuro Rengoku
Rengoku’s battle against Akaza demonstrates extraordinary skill and resolve under mortal danger. A mark could have made his stand even more formidable, but the story’s tragedy depends on his facing that battle without one. The counterfactual fits his combat ceiling; it would also change the emotional shape of his loss.
Tengen Uzui
Tengen survives a punishing fight against Gyutaro while dealing with severe injuries and protecting others. Given that level of danger, a mark would have been plausible within the story’s pattern. His retirement after the Entertainment District conflict, however, leaves less narrative room for a later awakening.
Shinobu Kocho
Shinobu repeatedly enters lethal confrontations despite lacking the physical strength to decapitate demons in the usual way. A mark might have suited her combat ingenuity and high-risk role, but her eventual strategy against Doma depends on a different kind of sacrifice. That makes her a compelling “could have,” not an obvious missing canon power-up.

Kanao Tsuyuri
Kanao faces Doma in a decisive, dangerous battle and has the skill to fight alongside Inosuke. A mark would have been a plausible extension of her growth from a controlled, hesitant fighter into someone making her own choices. The manga instead keeps the focus on that personal change and her tactical contribution.
Genya Shinazugawa
Genya repeatedly survives battles against formidable demons through unusual abilities and sheer persistence. His desperate role in the Upper Rank fights makes him a natural candidate for a mark in a different version of the story. Yet his distinct demon-eating power already gives him a separate path to fighting strength.
Inosuke Hashibira
Inosuke’s instincts and adaptability let him endure battles that should overwhelm him. His exposure to lethal combat makes a mark conceivable, but his wild, unconventional fighting style already distinguishes him from the Hashira whose awakenings the manga depicts.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
Zenitsu’s decisive fights show that he can reach a remarkable level of focus and speed when circumstances leave no alternative. A mark could have underscored that growth, especially in his confrontation with Kaigaku. The story instead makes his personal resolve and technique the center of that fight.

Yushiro
Yushiro contributes to the battle against Muzan through his demon abilities and support for the Demon Slayer Corps. A mark would be the least straightforward fit on this list: the series presents the mark as a phenomenon among humans, while Yushiro is a demon. His case works best as a deliberate “what if,” not a likely omitted awakening.

The most reliable way to follow each appearance and its context is to read the manga rather than rely on a character list. Shueisha’s official Demon Slayer series page lists volumes 1–23 and related books. Its official character book listing is supplementary material, not a substitute for the story’s battle scenes. The official anime goods portal lists licensed product categories, but does not establish when every manga reveal has been adapted for anime.
Shueisha announced worldwide circulation of 200 million copies for volumes 1–23, including digital editions, on July 17, 2025. That is a circulation figure, not a sales total or a count of individual readers.
