Demi Moore won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for The Substance—then lost the 2025 Academy Award for Best Actress to Anora star Mikey Madison. The result broke Moore’s strong run at major U.S. ceremonies, but it was not a unanimous awards-season picture: Madison had already won BAFTA’s Leading Actress award.
Who won the 2025 Best Actress Oscar?
Mikey Madison won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora. Moore was also nominated, for her performance in The Substance. The Academy’s official 97th ceremony record lists Madison as the winner.
How Moore’s awards run compared with Madison’s
The major awards did not all point to the same winner. Moore collected three prominent U.S. acting prizes, while Madison won at BAFTA and the Oscars. These ceremonies have separate voting bodies and category definitions, so their outcomes show a split awards season—not a single shared verdict.
| Ceremony | Demi Moore, The Substance | Mikey Madison, Anora | What the result shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Globes, January 5, 2025 | Winner, Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy. Golden Globes results. | The cited record does not establish Madison as winner in Moore’s category. | Moore earned an early high-profile win. |
| Critics Choice Awards and SAG Awards, 2025 | Won both acting prizes, according to the Los Angeles Times. | The cited account does not give Madison’s comparative result at these ceremonies. | Moore had a strong U.S. precursor run. |
| BAFTA Film Awards, 2025 | Leading Actress nominee. | Leading Actress winner, according to BAFTA’s results. | The awards picture was divided before the Oscars. |
| Academy Awards, 2025 | Best Actress nominee. | Best Actress winner, according to the Academy. | Madison took the season’s final headline prize. |
Why did Moore lose after winning those prizes?
The documented answer is that the awards bodies made different choices. Moore’s Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG wins made her Oscar loss a striking reversal of the U.S. precursor pattern; Madison’s BAFTA win had already shown that Moore was not sweeping every major ceremony.

At the 82nd Golden Globes on January 5, 2025, Moore won Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy. In her acceptance speech, she reflected on being underestimated: “Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that, I was a popcorn actress and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged.” The Associated Press transcribed the remarks and also reported Moore saying she was “in shock” and had never won anything as an actor despite working for more than 45 years. The AP does not identify the producer Moore referred to. Associated Press report.
