Del Records CEO José Ángel Del Villar was convicted by a federal jury in Los Angeles of conspiring to transact in the property of a sanctioned narcotics trafficker and violating the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act. In August 2025, he was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and fined $2 million. The case centered on concert business with a promoter designated by the U.S. Treasury Department—not a conviction for personally trafficking drugs.

What the jury convicted Del Villar of

On March 27, 2025, after a nine-day trial, a federal jury found Del Villar and his company, Del Entertainment Inc., guilty of one count of conspiracy to transact in property of specially designated narcotics traffickers and ten counts of violating the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the verdict in its verdict release.

The verdict was about transactions and business dealings prohibited by the Kingpin Act. It was not a conviction for Del Villar personally trafficking drugs. The charges named both Del Villar and Del Entertainment.

Why the Kingpin Act applied to the concert business

The Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act restricts people in the United States from conducting business with individuals and entities sanctioned under the law. According to the DOJ, the Treasury Department designated Guadalajara concert promoter Jesús Pérez Alvear, known as “Chucho,” and his company Gallistica Diamante, also known as Ticket Premier, as specially designated narcotics traffickers on April 6, 2018. The DOJ says Treasury’s stated rationale was that Pérez facilitated money laundering for the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and Los Cuinis. That explanation is Treasury’s rationale as recounted by the DOJ; it is not a separate finding that Del Villar knew about every cartel activity.

The concerts and transactions described by prosecutors

In its account of evidence presented at trial, the DOJ said Pérez promoted concerts for Del Entertainment in Mexico until March 2019. Prosecutors said Del Villar and the company continued arranging artist performances at concerts in which Pérez and Del Entertainment had a financial interest, despite knowing that dealing with Pérez was illegal.

The DOJ described a concert in Aguascalientes on April 28, 2018. It said FBI agents had told a musician about Pérez’s designation on April 19, and that Del Villar’s credit card paid for the private jet that flew the musician from Van Nuys Airport to the performance. The DOJ also identified later concerts in Mexicali and San José Iturbide, Guanajuato. These details are the government’s description of trial evidence.

From 2022 allegations to the 2025 sentence

Date What happened
June 14, 2022 The DOJ announced arrests and a criminal complaint alleging conspiracy. At that stage, the claims were allegations; the DOJ release stated that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Read the arrest announcement.
March 27, 2025 A jury returned guilty verdicts against Del Villar and Del Entertainment on one conspiracy count and ten Kingpin Act counts after a nine-day trial. Read the verdict announcement.
August 15, 2025 Del Villar was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and a $2 million fine. Del Entertainment received three years’ probation and a $1.8 million fine. The DOJ announced the sentences in its sentencing release; the judgment also records the conviction counts and sentence.

What sentence did Del Villar receive?

Del Villar’s sentence was 48 months in federal prison and a $2 million fine. Del Entertainment was sentenced separately to three years’ probation and a $1.8 million fine. These are the sentences imposed in August 2025, not the maximum penalties prosecutors discussed before sentencing.

The DOJ’s verdict announcement said Del Villar faced a statutory maximum of 30 years per count at the then-scheduled sentencing. That was a possible maximum, not the sentence ultimately imposed.
