All Might recognizes his instinct to save others and passes One For All to him, giving Midoriya a path into hero training at UA. His story is not just about gaining power: the official series introduction also emphasizes his classmates’ growth, battles, and friendships. The official character profile’s later status is equally important: eight years after graduating, Deku is Quirkless again, teaches at UA, and continues hero work using armor from All Might.
Who is Deku?
Deku is the hero name of Izuku Midoriya, the central character of My Hero Academia. In the story’s world, about 80 percent of people have a Quirk, a superhuman ability; Midoriya is born without one. He nevertheless wants to become a hero and save people. His willingness to act when others are in danger is what leads All Might to recognize his potential.
The official profile lists his birthday as July 15, his height as 166 cm, and Daiki Yamashita as his Japanese voice actor. The official series introduction describes the anime as a story of Midoriya’s journey toward becoming the greatest hero, alongside his classmates’ growth, battles, and friendship. The anime is based on Kohei Horikoshi’s manga.
What is Deku’s Quirk?
The official profile gives Midoriya’s Quirk history as “Quirkless → One For All → Quirkless.” He is born without a Quirk, inherits One For All from All Might, and is listed as Quirkless in the profile’s post-graduation status. That sequence matters: the official profile does not present him as currently retaining One For All.

How One For All began
One For All is an inherited power. The official terminology guide traces its origin to All For One giving his brother Yoichi a stockpiling Quirk. Yoichi also possessed a transfer Quirk, and the two combined into One For All. All Might is its eighth holder; Deku is the ninth.
What makes Deku’s inheritance distinctive
According to the official terminology guide, Deku is the first One For All holder able to use the individual Quirks of the predecessors. His role in the power’s history is therefore more than simply receiving the same ability All Might used: his ninth-holder status gives him access to those inherited abilities as well.

What happens to Deku after UA?
The official character profile describes Deku eight years after graduating from UA. At that point, he teaches at the school and continues doing hero work in armor given to him by All Might, despite being Quirkless. This later status completes the profile’s Quirk sequence and shows that the story’s definition of his heroism is not limited to possessing One For All.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand Deku’s place in the story
Deku’s character arc begins with a mismatch between his ambition and the world’s expectations: he wants to save people, but he has no Quirk in a society where Quirks are common. All Might’s recognition gives him a chance, while his relationships at UA broaden the story beyond a solo rise in power. The official introduction frames the classmates’ development, battles, and friendship as central parts of the series, not incidental background to Deku’s abilities.
