Film critic Karan Bali argues that the original has the greater impact, while also recognizing the remake’s performances, camerawork and score. “Better” is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking—but Bali’s case gives viewers a useful way to compare how the two films convey their central emotional burden.
Which is better: Deep Jwele Jai or Khamoshi?
If the question is which film makes the more persuasive emotional impression, Bali’s answer is Deep Jwele Jai. His 2016 Scroll review frames the comparison as a “non-debate” and argues that the Bengali original beats its Hindi remake. That is an attributable critical verdict, not a demonstrated consensus: the available sources do not establish audience polling, review aggregates or a systematic scene-by-scene comparison.
A fair comparison should also account for what Bali praises in Khamoshi: its central performances, evocative camerawork and new score. Those strengths do not overturn his conclusion, but they make the remake more than a simple foil for the original. Read Karan Bali’s review in Scroll.
How the two films are connected
Deep Jwele Jai was directed by Asit Sen, based on a story by Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, with Suchitra Sen among its cast. The Bengal Film Archive records its release on 1 May 1959 at Minar, Bijoli and Chhabighar, and identifies it as a black-and-white 35mm film. Bali identifies Khamoshi (1969) as Asit Sen’s Hindi remake. Moviebuff also describes Deep Jweley Jai as the original version of Khamoshi.

The titles appear with slightly different spellings across listings. The Bengal Film Archive uses Deep Jwele Jai; Moviebuff uses Deep Jweley Jai. The archive’s filmography record provides the Bengali film’s credits and release details, while Moviebuff’s listing corroborates the original-and-remake relationship. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ Indian Panorama 2014 catalogue also lists Deep Jele Jai among Suchitra Sen’s important films.
What to compare when watching them
The most useful comparison is not simply whether one film is better, but how each version creates its effect. Bali’s review points toward several elements worth watching; these are ways to frame a viewing, not claims of a verified shot-by-shot analysis.

The lead performances
Notice how each film’s central performance communicates the nurse’s emotional burden: through dialogue, gesture, silence and the way the character responds to others. Bali recognizes the performances in Khamoshi as a strength, so the remake should be judged on its own acting as well as against the original’s impact.
Framing and atmosphere
Pay attention to how framing and camerawork establish the mood around the nurse and the people she cares for. Bali specifically praises Khamoshi’s evocative camerawork. Whether the original’s visual approach feels more affecting is a matter for the viewer’s close attention, not something established by the archive record.

Songs and score
Music can shape a viewer’s experience of a scene as strongly as performance or image. Bali notes Khamoshi’s new score as one of its strengths. Compare what the songs and music do in each version—how they colour a moment and contribute to its emotional effect—rather than treating the remake’s score as automatically inferior because it is newer.
Language, audience and impact
A remake made in another language can change a story’s tone or reach even when the films share a director. The comparison is therefore about the impact each version achieves, not a claim that one language or audience is inherently better suited to the material. Bali’s central argument is that, for him, Deep Jwele Jai achieves the stronger effect.

Why the “non-debate” needs a qualification
Scroll’s headline captures Bali’s position, not a settled verdict shared by all critics or viewers. No named statistic, comparative box-office figure or audience survey substantiates a universal ranking. The distinction matters: viewers can accept Bali’s argument for the original while still valuing the performances, images and music he identifies in Khamoshi.
