When was the December 2025 supermoon?
NASA’s sky calendar lists the full Moon at 23:14 UTC on December 4, 2025. That was 6:14 p.m. EST the same day. The date differed in some local calendars: in time zones east of UTC, the peak could fall after midnight on December 5. Give the time zone whenever citing the exact peak. Peak illumination is a precise astronomical moment, but the Moon appears full to observers on the nights around it. You did not need to view it at the exact peak minute.
Why was it called a supermoon?
The full Moon and lunar perigee—the Moon’s closest point to Earth in its orbit—both occurred on December 4. NASA’s calendar gives perigee as 11:06 UTC and the full Moon as 23:14 UTC, about twelve hours later. timeanddate also described the event as a supermoon.

NASA explains that a “supermoon” occurs when a full Moon coincides with perigee, but the word is not an official astronomical term. NASA notes that common usage often applies the label when a full Moon is within 90 percent of perigee; that threshold is a convention, not a universal standard. See NASA’s supermoon explainer.
For the December 4 full Moon, timeanddate reports an Earth–Moon center-to-center distance of 357,218 km (221,965 miles). That is a source-reported distance for this event, not a direct measurement of how large or bright it appeared to a particular observer.

What was the December full Moon called?
Cold Moon is the common December name in the cited almanac and reference sources, reflecting cold-season associations in the Northern Hemisphere. Names vary by tradition: sources also list Moon Before Yule and Long Night Moon, while timeanddate records Oak Moon as another Celtic name. These are traditional labels, not a single universal naming system. Farmers’ Almanac’s late-2025 full Moon listing also gives December 4 at 6:14 p.m. EST.

NASA gives general comparison limits of up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter for a Moon at perigee compared with the faintest full Moon at apogee. Those figures are not event-specific measurements for December 4, 2025. The label describes the Moon’s orbital relationship to Earth; it does not mean that every observer would notice a dramatic difference in size or brightness.
