Spoilers for all 10 episodes. Viktor Sams is Kira Scott, Imogene’s mother, who survived the car bombing and went underground. But Kira did not kill Katherine Collier: Anna killed her during a confrontation over Katherine’s affair and Anna’s parentage. Imogene ultimately turns against Kira’s violent campaign, while the finale leaves Anna’s next move and a new mystery in the snow unresolved.
Who is Viktor Sams, and did Kira fake her death?
Yes. Kira survived the bombing that Imogene believed had killed her, then disappeared and built the Viktor Sams identity and network. The finale reveals the connection through Hilde Eriksen, who presents herself as an Interpol agent: Hilde is Kira, and Kira is Viktor Sams.

Viktor Sams is not just a name. It is the persona behind a network that gathers compromising information about wealthy and powerful people, then uses blackmail, manipulation, and violence to punish or control them. Kira’s disappearance allowed her to work covertly, but it also left Imogene to grow up with grief, false assumptions about her mother’s death, and anger at detective Rufus Cotesworth for what she believed was his failure to solve the case.
Why did Kira target the Colliers?
Kira’s campaign is rooted in the Collier family’s business history, including the Captionem Blue and Collier Mills scandal. The finale links the cruise’s passengers to knowledge of, participation in, benefit from, or concealment of wrongdoing connected to the family. The Varuna voyage is therefore designed as a reckoning, not an ordinary holiday: Kira uses secrets, the ship’s social divisions, and the threat of an explosion to force the guests into a crisis.

- Kira claims to be pursuing justice, but her methods turn exposure into coercion and punishment without accountability.
The show does not make Kira an uncomplicated whistleblower. Her targets may have done serious wrong within the story, but that does not make her manipulation, murder, explosives, or use of followers morally equivalent to justice. The conflict with Imogene is partly about whether righteous anger can justify those methods.
Who killed Katherine Collier?
Anna killed Katherine herself; her death is not presented as a direct Viktor Sams assassination. Before the confrontation, the season reveals that Katherine had an affair with family lawyer Llewellyn Mathers, who was Anna’s biological father. Anna had been raised as Laurence Collier’s daughter.

When Katherine’s secret and Anna’s parentage come out, Anna hits Katherine during their confrontation, killing her. Kira’s organization later protects Anna. The distinction matters because the season has encouraged suspicion that every death belongs to the Viktor Sams operation, but Katherine’s murder grows out of a family secret and Anna’s immediate confrontation with her mother.
Why does Imogene turn against Kira?
Imogene initially leaves the ship with Kira. Once she understands the scale of the murders and manipulation, however, she rejects her mother’s approach and helps bring the Viktor Sams operation to justice. Imogene’s objection is not simply that Kira chose the wrong targets. She sees that Kira has adopted the same kind of unchecked power she condemns: deciding who is guilty, controlling what others know, and imposing punishment without being answerable for it.
The revelation also changes Imogene’s relationship with Rufus. Her anger began with the belief that he abandoned the search for her mother’s killer; the truth reframes their partnership as a shared effort to uncover what happened. That shift offers some emotional movement, not a complete resolution of the years of loss and mistrust.
What happens to Anna and what does the final scene mean?
After Katherine’s death, one of Kira’s men approaches Anna and asks what she needs to do next. The exchange suggests that Kira’s network has recruited or activated her, but the finale does not show what role Anna will take. It leaves open the possibility that Imogene’s former closest friend—and now a killer—could become part of Kira’s operation.

Separately, Imogene, Leila, Jules, and Teddy find a bloody trail involving severed body parts in the snow. It signals a new case for the group rather than resolving the Varuna murders. The series does not identify the victim or explain the discovery before the season ends.

No second Hulu season was made. Hulu canceled the series on March 29, 2024, a few weeks after the March 5 finale. The official Hulu catalog lists one season with 10 episodes; availability can vary by location and change over time.

The finale resolves the central identity and revenge plot, but it was also designed to lead into more story. Anna’s apparent connection to Kira and the discovery in the snow remain unanswered, so the ending is best understood as a solved main mystery with an unproduced continuation—not a fully closed story.
