DeAndre Hopkins’ mother is Sabrina Greenlee, who survived a 2002 chemical attack that left her severely burned and ultimately blind. In interviews, Greenlee has spoken about the assault, her recovery, her personal choice to forgive, and the domestic-violence advocacy she built afterward.
What happened to Sabrina Greenlee?
The State reports that Greenlee was attacked on July 20, 2002, by a woman who was also seeing the man Greenlee was dating. The attacker splashed a mixture of bleach, boiling water and lye onto Greenlee’s face. The chemical composition is reported by The State; it should not be taken as an independently confirmed analysis. Coverage has often called the incident an “acid attack,” but “chemical attack” more precisely reflects the mixture described in the reporting.
The State says Greenlee suffered burns over 17% of her body, spent nearly a month in a medically induced coma and underwent dozens of eye-related surgeries. She retained limited eyesight for roughly a decade and, according to the outlet, has been completely blind since 2015. CBS News and The State report that the attacker was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Greenlee was raising her children when the attack happened. Her son DeAndre Hopkins was 10. The State describes a lasting football tradition: Hopkins would find his mother in the stands and give her the ball after scoring a touchdown near her seat. CBS News reports that he began giving her the ball in recreation leagues, remembering that she had shown up to watch him play.

How Greenlee describes recovery and forgiveness
Greenlee has described forgiveness as part of her own path through trauma, not as something survivors should be expected to do. In a 2024 interview with CBS News, she said she needed to forgive so she could return to being a mother to her children. “I knew that I had to forgive the people who offended me or left me there despite everything that I’ve been through. I did it for my children, because I needed to get back to being a mother. That was very important for me,” Greenlee said.
Her account also describes trying to see the person who attacked her as human. That is Greenlee’s personal interpretation of her recovery; it does not lessen the violence she endured or create an obligation for other survivors to forgive.

From telling her story to domestic-violence advocacy
Greenlee founded and leads SMOOOTH, short for Speaking Mentally, Outwardly Opening Opportunities Toward Healing, a nonprofit serving women and children affected by domestic violence. In a profile updated in 2025, The State described the organization’s work as including empowerment conferences, transition programs and events for children and women. Programs can change, so consult SMOOOTH’s own current information for details about services or eligibility.
Greenlee told The State why she chose to share more of her experience: “The story needed to be told, because people are really going through some horrific things when it comes to domestic violence,” she said. She has also recounted her life and recovery in her memoir, Grant Me Vision: A Journey of Family, Faith, and Forgiveness.

Why DeAndre Hopkins’s support is part of the story
Hopkins has spoken about the meaning of his mother’s presence at his games. “It was just having that remembrance of my mom being there to see me play when I was a kid,” he told CBS News. The football gesture offers a glimpse of their bond, but Greenlee’s account remains its own story: survival after a devastating assault and the advocacy she chose to pursue afterward.
