They are personal recommendations, not a ranked “best of” list: Daley says he did not want to rank the series. His MobileSyrup article, published January 2, 2026, also leaves out follow-up seasons and films that replace seasons.
What the list includes
The six selections are a sampler of different genres and moods, rather than a contest for the top spot. Scarlet is the sole film; the other five are series. Daley excludes later seasons such as Kaiju No. 8 season 2 and Dandadan, as well as films including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle (Part 1: Akaza Returns) and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.

The six picks
Scarlet
This time-bending film follows a medieval-era swordswoman seeking vengeance. Fatally injured, she encounters a man from the present in a surreal world. Daley watched it in theatres and singled out its sequences and 3D-style animation approach. At the time of his January 2, 2026 article, it was not yet available to stream.

Lazarus
Set in 2049, the series follows a task force searching for scientist Skinner after people who took his pain medication, Hapna, receive a warning that they will die. Shinichirō Watanabe created the series, and MAPPA animated it. Daley’s article said it was available on Amazon Prime Video via StackTV at publication.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes
Set several years before My Hero Academia, this story shifts its focus from licensed heroes to unregistered vigilantes operating in the same world. The January 2026 article listed Crunchyroll as its streaming home.
Rank #2
Gachiakuta
A boy from a floating city is blamed for his father’s death and cast into the junkyard below. There, he befriends the Janitors and confronts the Raiders. Daley notes that the world expands after the early episodes, including the idea of characters imbuing familiar objects with power. His article listed Crunchyroll as the place to watch.
The Summer Hikaru Died
Yoshiki realizes that his friend Hikaru has returned changed after disappearing for a week. The result is a horror story with spooky, fantastical and homoerotic elements. Daley recommends it to viewers looking for something less focused on action. At publication, the article listed Netflix.
Rank #3
Sanda
In a society that prizes children and discourages them from growing up, a child turns to Kazushige Sanda, a descendant of Santa Claus whose powers awaken. Daley describes a mix of comedy and action with yuri elements. His article listed Prime Video at publication.
How to choose among them
- For an anime film: start with Scarlet, the only movie among the six. Its time-bending vengeance story and 3D-style visuals are distinct from the series picks.
- For speculative action: Lazarus, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and Gachiakuta all lean into action, but their premises differ: a search for a scientist, unlicensed heroes, and a junkyard world below a floating city.
- For horror and unease: choose The Summer Hikaru Died, built around a familiar friend who has come back changed.
- For a tonal mix: Sanda pairs comedy and action with a setting that turns childhood and growing up into central conflicts.
