Chris Evans appears in Deadpool & Wolverine as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch from the earlier Fantastic Four films—not as Captain America. The movie first uses Evans’s familiar MCU image to misdirect viewers, then brings Johnny into the Void, where Cassandra Nova kills him. The cameo is a Fox-era Marvel callback within the film’s multiverse story; it does not, by itself, establish that the earlier Fantastic Four films share continuity with Marvel’s newer Fantastic Four story.
Why is Chris Evans in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Evans returns as Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, whom he played in the earlier Fantastic Four films. Visual effects supervisor Vincent Papaix identified the role as Evans reprising that earlier Marvel character. Papaix said Johnny’s death was in the script from the beginning and that ILM created a digital version of Evans for the scene. ILM’s interview with Papaix was published December 20, 2024.

Is Evans playing the Human Torch or Captain America?
He is playing Johnny Storm, not Steve Rogers. The apparent Captain America connection is deliberate misdirection: screenwriter Rhett Reese said the writers expected viewers to assume Evans was appearing as Captain America before revealing that he was Johnny. That surprise draws on Evans’s later, widely recognized MCU role while recalling his earlier part in the Fantastic Four films. Reese and co-writer Paul Wernick discussed the choice in an August 2024 interview with The Credits.
What happens to Johnny Storm in the Void?
Johnny is with Deadpool and Wolverine in the Void, the film’s setting for characters displaced from their usual worlds. Cassandra Nova kills him there. Papaix described Johnny’s fate as a “truly unfortunate demise” and said the sequence was planned from day one. The scene’s dark humor comes from the gap between the heroic Human Torch and the abrupt, graphic end he meets.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
How does the Fantastic Four connect to the film’s multiverse?
The multiverse lets characters from different Marvel film histories appear together without requiring them to have lived in one shared timeline. Reese described variants as characters who exist in different universes and take different paths. In the film, the TVA and the Void provide the story framework for encounters across those worlds, including the return of a Fox-era character such as Johnny Storm.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also described Deadpool & Wolverine as engaging with the history of Fox’s characters and the X-Men, while offering hints about Marvel’s planned mutant saga. His comments give the cameo broader franchise context, but do not identify Johnny’s appearance as proof that the earlier Fantastic Four continuity has been combined with the newer MCU team’s story. Feige’s interview with The Walt Disney Company was published July 25, 2024.

Does the cameo confirm the old and new Fantastic Four films share a continuity?
No such continuity link is established by these interviews. They support identifying Evans as the Fox-era Johnny Storm and understanding his appearance through the film’s multiverse setup. They do not assign the character an Earth number or say that every earlier Fantastic Four film belongs to the same continuity as the MCU’s newer Fantastic Four story. The cameo is best understood as a multiverse callback, not a definitive continuity map.
