Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide in 2024, taking the record from Joker. It held that lifetime-gross title until The Odyssey passed it in August 2026. The Marvel film still holds a separate record: the largest global opening weekend for an R-rated movie, according to Guinness World Records.
What record did Deadpool & Wolverine set?
The 2024 film set the worldwide lifetime box-office record for an R-rated movie, surpassing Joker, whose previous record was $1,035,731,813, recorded November 25, 2019. Guinness World Records gives Deadpool & Wolverine a worldwide gross of $1,338,071,348 as of January 30, 2025. Disney announced on August 16, 2024, that the film had reached $1.086 billion worldwide in 23 days and become the highest-grossing R-rated film at that time. Disney’s announcement and Guinness’s record entry document the milestone.

Is Deadpool & Wolverine still the highest-grossing R-rated movie?
No. The Odyssey overtook it in August 2026. The Guardian reported on August 21, citing figures compiled by The Numbers, that The Odyssey had earned approximately $1.35 billion worldwide, compared with about $1.34 billion for Deadpool & Wolverine. The Associated Press reported two days later that The Odyssey had reached $1.4 billion while it was still playing internationally, so that figure was a dated, then-current total rather than a final settled gross. See The Guardian’s report and the AP report.
Worldwide lifetime gross: the figures by source
Published totals differ slightly by source and reporting date. Box Office Mojo lists a final worldwide gross of $1,338,073,645; Guinness gives $1,338,071,348 as of January 30, 2025, attributing its figure to The Numbers. The gap is roughly $2,300, small against a gross above $1.3 billion but worth noting when quoting an exact total.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
| Source | Worldwide lifetime gross | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Box Office Mojo | $1,338,073,645 | Listed final gross; $636,745,858 domestic (47.6%) and $701,327,787 international (52.4%). |
| Guinness World Records | $1,338,071,348 | Figure stated as of January 30, 2025, attributed to The Numbers. |
These are nominal worldwide grosses, not inflation-adjusted comparisons. Box Office Mojo lists the domestic distributor as Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film’s rating as R, and its domestic release date as July 26, 2024.
The opening-weekend record is a different milestone
The lifetime record measures a film’s total theatrical gross over its run. The opening-weekend record measures its first weekend, and it remains a separate achievement for Deadpool & Wolverine: Guinness lists a $445.4 million global R-rated opening weekend. Disney’s July 28, 2024 announcement reported $444.1 million worldwide at the time, including $211 million domestically. Box Office Mojo lists the domestic opening at $211,435,291. Those totals come from different sources and reporting moments, so they should not be combined as if they were one standardized figure. Disney’s opening announcement is at the Walt Disney Company; Guinness’s opening record is on its record page.

Why the film’s record run mattered
Starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the film paired two established Marvel characters in what Disney described as a buddy film. It opened to a reported $444.1 million worldwide in July 2024, then crossed $1 billion and claimed the R-rated lifetime-gross record the following month. Its rise from opening-weekend event to billion-dollar hit explains why the 2024 record was notable; the later change of holder does not erase that run.
