Miller Gardner, el hijo de 14 años del exjugador de los Yankees Brett Gardner, murió por intoxicación por monóxido de carbono, según determinaron las autoridades de Costa Rica. Esa conclusión se comunicó después del anuncio inicial de su familia, que dijo que había enfermado durante unas vacaciones y murió mientras dormía.
Qué se sabe sobre la muerte de Miller Gardner
La familia Gardner anunció el fallecimiento el 23 de marzo de 2025. Dijo que Miller había muerto la mañana del viernes 21 de marzo, durante unas vacaciones en Costa Rica, y que varios familiares también se habían enfermado. En ese primer comunicado, Brett y Jessica Gardner expresaron que aún tenían muchas preguntas y pidieron privacidad mientras atravesaban el duelo. MLB informó posteriormente, citando a Associated Press, que las autoridades costarricenses determinaron que la causa fue intoxicación por monóxido de carbono.
Cómo cambió la información a medida que avanzó la investigación
El anuncio inicial de la familia
Al comunicar la muerte, los padres dijeron que Miller había fallecido mientras dormía y que la familia estaba buscando respuestas. Esa descripción reflejaba lo que sabían entonces; no establecía la causa médica de la muerte. El comunicado, difundido por los Yankees el 23 de marzo de 2025, decía: “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.” En español: «Tenemos tantas preguntas y tan pocas respuestas en este momento, pero sí sabemos que murió pacíficamente mientras dormía la mañana del viernes 21 de marzo». El comunicado también pidió privacidad.
La causa comunicada por las autoridades
El 2 de abril de 2025, las autoridades de Costa Rica comunicaron como conclusión final la intoxicación por monóxido de carbono. Según el reporte de MLB, Randall Zúñiga, director del Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), dijo que el cuerpo presentaba una cantidad letal de carboxihemoglobina, una sustancia que se forma cuando el monóxido de carbono se une a la hemoglobina. MLB publicó su información el 3 de abril.

Las hipótesis iniciales no fueron la conclusión
En las primeras etapas se consideraron la asfixia y una posible intoxicación alimentaria. La intoxicación alimentaria se planteó porque otros familiares se habían sentido mal; el reporte de MLB indicó que la autopsia descartó la asfixia. Ninguna de esas hipótesis debe confundirse con la causa final comunicada por las autoridades.
Investigación y demanda civil: qué está establecido
En septiembre de 2025, AP informó que las autoridades habían realizado una segunda intervención en el resort para recopilar pruebas. La fiscalía dijo entonces que la investigación buscaba confirmar o descartar una posible muerte por negligencia; AP no informó de cargos en ese reporte. El 20 de marzo de 2026, AP informó que la familia había presentado una demanda civil por negligencia y muerte injusta contra los propietarios y otras personas vinculadas al resort. La demanda alega que la sala de máquinas no tenía ventilación adecuada. Se trata de una alegación de los demandantes, no de una conclusión judicial: la presentación de una demanda no significa que un tribunal haya determinado responsabilidad. AP informó sobre la demanda.
