The reporting documents the cover changes and the allegations; it does not establish that Mattina used AI, identify a direct DC explanation for this decision, or provide a verifiable response from Mattina.
What happened to Mattina’s DC covers?
On June 22–24, 2024, comics publications reported that DC was pulling unpublished Mattina covers from upcoming issues and replacing them. The Beat’s account named covers for Action Comics #1069, Superman #18, Batman: The Brave and the Bold #17 and two additional covers for that title, as well as two covers for Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #1. It identified replacement artists for some covers, including Khary Randolph, Tirso Cons and Homare; other replacement credits were reported as to be announced. The Beat’s June 24 report and Bleeding Cool’s contemporaneous coverage describe the changes as following accusations of AI use.
Why were the covers replaced?
The reported trigger was public criticism alleging that details in recent Mattina cover art reflected AI use. The Beat associated the allegation with artist Adi Granov. That is an account of the controversy and its timing, not proof of how the art was made. The material reported here does not establish that Mattina admitted using AI, that DC reached a public technical finding, or that all of Mattina’s work was AI-generated.
No direct DC statement explaining the Mattina cover changes is established in the available reporting, and no verifiable response from Mattina to this specific allegation or the cancellations was located. Accordingly, the most supportable description is that the covers were reportedly withdrawn after AI-use allegations—not that DC publicly confirmed the allegations.

What was planned for Action Comics #1069?
DC’s official July 2024 solicitation listed Mattina as the artist for a variant cover of Action Comics #1069. The Beat later reported that the cover was among those pulled and replaced. The solicitation establishes the originally planned credit, not that the withdrawn art appeared in the final comic. The reporting covered several titles, but the sources cited here do not independently verify the final retail cover for each issue.
For readers looking for the published comic, check the issue number and the specific cover version in any listing. The original solicitation is not evidence that a copy being sold includes the cancelled Mattina variant.

What DC’s separate originality statement does—and does not—tell us
In April 2024, a DC spokesperson told Bleeding Cool: “DC Comics has longstanding policies in place that all artwork must be the artist’s original work. We are looking into the specifics of this situation.” The statement concerned a separate controversy involving artist Jingxiong Guo, also known as Daxiong, as reported in Bleeding Cool’s April 19 coverage. It is not a DC statement about Mattina or an explanation for the June cover changes, so it should not be presented as one.

Mattina had been credited on DC variant covers before June 2024. For example, DC’s February 2024 DC Connect solicitation listed a Mattina variant for The Penguin #9. This establishes that he had contributed solicited DC variant-cover art before the episode; it does not establish his employment status or later relationship with the publisher.
