DC and Marvel have characters that share powers, equipment, visual traits, or story roles—but resemblance alone does not prove one publisher copied the other. The clearest comparison in the available official material is Deathstroke and Deadpool: DC dates Deathstroke to 1980 and Deadpool to 1990, notes their shared mercenary and regenerative traits, and also explains how their personalities and roles differ. Other familiar pairings are best understood as parallels, not established acts of borrowing.

Does one publisher copy the other?

Sometimes creators deliberately draw on existing characters; at other times, similar ideas arise independently or reflect familiar superhero conventions. A publication date can show which character appeared first, but it cannot establish why a later character was created. Strong evidence of intentional influence requires creator testimony or authoritative production history—not a resemblance alone.

That distinction matters because comic coverage often calls characters “copies” when it has identified a shared premise but not documented a causal link. The examples below are commonly compared characters, not a verified roster of copying incidents. The available evidence does not support the title’s proposed 12-versus-13 count.

The strongest documented parallel: Deathstroke and Deadpool

In “Who is DC’s Deadpool?,” published November 19, 2025, DC editorial writer Alex Jaffe says Deathstroke and Deadpool are “certainly similar physically”: both are masked mercenaries with regenerative powers. The article also stresses that their personalities and narrative roles differ, so the resemblance should not be mistaken for sameness.

DC dates Deathstroke’s debut to 1980, while Marvel’s official Deadpool guide identifies New Mutants (1983) #98 as Deadpool’s first appearance, in 1990. That chronology makes Deathstroke the earlier character, but it does not, by itself, prove Deadpool was copied from him. DC also points to Red Tool as a character intentionally inspired by Deadpool—a more specific example of influence than an inference based solely on shared traits.

Other familiar DC–Marvel character comparisons

These pairings are often raised because of a shared ability, tool, setting, or broad archetype. The sources support treating them as comparisons; they do not establish that one character was modeled on the other.

Green Arrow and Hawkeye: expert archers

DC says Green Arrow first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941 and identifies archery as a defining skill. Green Arrow and Marvel’s Hawkeye are natural points of comparison because both are prominent heroes who rely on archery. The available sources do not establish a creator link between them or provide enough official Marvel chronology to make a causal claim. DC’s Green Arrow history documents the character’s debut and archery role.

Aquaman and Namor: heroes of the underwater world

Aquaman and Namor are commonly compared as undersea heroes and rulers. DC dates Aquaman’s debut to 1941, while noting that a 1959 origin story helped shape the modern version of the character. That is useful context for Aquaman’s development, but it does not show that either character’s creator borrowed from the other. See DC’s Aquaman history.

Flash and Quicksilver: super-speed

Both characters are associated with extraordinary speed, which makes them an easy comparison for readers. The sources available here do not establish their individual publication chronology or creator intent in enough detail to say one copied the other.

Swamp Thing and Man-Thing: supernatural plant-like figures

Their names and broad creature concepts invite comparison, but the evidence at hand does not establish a direct creative connection. Similar concepts are not proof of copying.

Superman, Sentry, and Hyperion: variations on the powerful hero

Sentry and Hyperion are often compared with Superman because they occupy a broad archetype: exceptionally powerful, often flying heroes. That shared role does not, on the evidence available here, establish that either was directly based on Superman.

Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family: a documented naming history

DC’s history of the Marvel Family describes a real publisher and naming interaction: DC licensed the Marvel Family in 1972 and recounts the name change associated with Marvel’s similarly named character. This is a documented history of licensing and naming, not proof that one publisher copied the other’s character idea. The distinction between a name or trademark issue and creative borrowing is essential. DC’s Marvel Family history provides its account.

How to assess a claim that a character was copied

When weighing a comparison, separate evidence of resemblance from evidence of influence. A useful assessment checks:

  • Publication chronology: Verify each character’s first appearance from reliable publisher or issue records.
  • Specific shared features: Compare origins, powers, equipment, visual design, personality, and role—not just a broad label such as “archer” or “speedster.”
  • Creator or production evidence: Look for a creator’s statement or authoritative account linking the later character to the earlier one.
  • Differences: Note where the characters diverge; distinct personalities and roles can make an apparent match less exact.

For more context on Deadpool’s publication history, Marvel’s official character guide identifies his first appearance. DC’s DC Universe: Origins collects origin stories for more than fifty DC characters. Those sources can help readers check character histories; they do not turn resemblance into proof of copying.
