Daya Pawar’s Baluta, first published in Marathi in 1978, remains a landmark autobiography because it connects one life to a community’s experience of caste oppression, resistance and the struggle for dignity. Its candid account provoked disagreement among some readers, but that controversy was part of the book’s challenge to silence and idealized portrayals of suffering. The anniversary title dates to 2018; the book’s continuing significance is best understood through its subject, reception and influence.

What is Baluta about?

Baluta is the autobiography of Marathi writer Daya Pawar, born in Dhamangaon. Its narrative moves between rural Maharashtra and Mumbai, tracing the difficulties of pursuing dignity and individuality within caste hierarchy. The publisher places much of the story in the 1940s and 1950s, describing a world shaped by untouchability and caste violence as well as community courage and Pawar’s own contradictions. Scroll’s 2018 anniversary essay and Speaking Tiger’s book description present the work as autobiography, rather than a novel.

The movement from village to city is not simply a story of escape. The book brings the reader into the pressures that follow a person across settings: inherited social rank, exclusion and the effort to claim a life on one’s own terms. At the same time, Pawar’s personal story opens onto collective experience, making community life central to its account.

Why was the book controversial?

Baluta was unusually candid about oppression, sexuality and community life. Yogesh Maitreya’s Scroll essay describes a literary culture with little tradition of representing Dalit lives on their own terms, and reports that some Dalit readers objected to the book’s revelations and treatment of sexuality. The Indian Express account separately notes criticism of its depiction of Mahar polygamy.

Those accounts describe particular, mixed responses, not a unanimous rejection by Dalit readers. The disagreement also points to a deeper question: who has the right to narrate painful community realities, and what forms of candour are considered acceptable? Maitreya reads the book as refusing both shame and romanticized portrayals of oppression. He also argues that it locates agency in ordinary people and collective conscience rather than in a lone saviour. Those are his interpretations of the book, not uncontested critical consensus.

How did Baluta influence later writing?

The 2018 Scroll anniversary essay calls Baluta a milestone in Marathi, Dalit and Indian literature. The Indian Express describes it as an influence on the later Dalit memoir tradition, mentioning Laxman Mane’s Upara and Laxman Gaikwad’s Uchalya; Loksatta’s Marathi anniversary essay likewise places the book within a broader wave of Dalit autobiographies. These works offer useful points of comparison, not an exhaustive or definitive family tree of the genre. Loksatta’s anniversary perspective gives additional context in Marathi.

Scroll reports that Pawar’s book received the Maharashtra Government Award and a Ford Foundation award in 1982. It also places translations into Hindi, German, French and Italian between 1981 and 1992. These award and translation details are reported by that 2018 essay.

When was Baluta translated into English?

Jerry Pinto’s English translation appeared in 2015, as recorded by Google Books and Speaking Tiger. The English edition gives readers who do not read Marathi access to Pawar’s autobiography, while remaining distinct from the Marathi original. Scroll reported in 2018 that the Marathi text then had six editions and was reprinted at least three times a year; that is a time-specific report, not current sales or reprint data.

Which edition should a reader choose?

Choose according to the language you want to read and the edition you can identify. The English paperback listed by Speaking Tiger is Baluta by Daya Pawar, translated by Jerry Pinto, ISBN 9789385288203. It is not the original Marathi edition. Google Books records a 2015 English edition of 299 pages; pagination and format can vary by edition or printing.

  • For the original: look for the Marathi text and verify the publisher and edition listed by the bookseller.
  • For an English reading experience: look for Jerry Pinto’s translation and confirm that the listing identifies Speaking Tiger and the edition you intend to buy.
