Day Shift was not verified as the U.S. movie of the day when it first appeared. The strongest documented “number one” claim is narrower: Netflix reported that the 2022 film topped its English Films List for the week of August 15, 2022. As for whether it is worth watching, reactions are mixed: critics were more reserved than Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score suggests.
What is Day Shift about?
Netflix describes Day Shift as an R-rated vampire action-comedy, released in 2022, with a runtime of 1 hour and 53 minutes. Jamie Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a Los Angeles pool cleaner whose real work is hunting vampires. The story pairs that secret job with his effort to provide for his daughter. Dave Franco and Natasha Liu Bordizzo are also among the cast. Netflix’s official title page
What does “number one” mean here?
Netflix’s weekly report placed Day Shift at the top of its English Films List for the week of August 15, 2022. Netflix reported 63.39 million hours viewed for the film on that list and said it appeared in the Top 10 in 93 countries. Those are figures from that specific weekly report; they do not establish that the film was the number-one movie in the United States on a particular day. Netflix’s weekly Top 10 report
How do critics’ and audience reactions differ?
Rotten Tomatoes’ page showed a 58% Tomatometer from 139 reviews and a 76% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are changeable scores from that site’s collected reviews and ratings, not a survey of every critic or viewer. Rotten Tomatoes’ Day Shift page

The difference is one of emphasis, not a unanimous split. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus is unfavorable about how the action and comedy come together, suggesting that the star power and goofy setup do not fully overcome weaknesses in execution. Its audience-facing summary is more forgiving, presenting the film as a relatively painless way to pass the time. The premise and energetic action may work for some viewers even if the comedy-action mix does not satisfy others.
Why does the film lean so heavily on action?
The film’s physical style has a production context: director J.J. Perry previously worked as a stunt coordinator, and Netflix Tudum’s premiere coverage highlighted the stunts and contortionist vampires. That background helps explain the emphasis on movement and spectacle; it is not proof that every viewer will find the action effective. Netflix Tudum’s premiere coverage

A vampire world with an influence
Screenwriter Tyler Tice told Netflix Tudum, “I just liked the idea of having this whole supernatural world that feasts on us right under our nose.” He also named The Lost Boys among his biggest influences. That points to the kind of hidden-in-plain-sight vampire premise behind Day Shift, rather than establishing a direct comparison in quality or tone. Netflix Tudum’s interview with Tyler Tice
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Day Shift worth watching?
It is a reasonable pick if you want a brisk, R-rated vampire movie built around stunt-heavy action, a knowingly goofy premise, and Jamie Foxx’s lead performance. Go in expecting a broad action-comedy rather than a tightly executed blend of comedy and choreography: the critic consensus is a clear caution, while the more positive audience score shows that plenty of Rotten Tomatoes users were more receptive. The available scores and creator comments cannot predict an individual viewer’s reaction.
