His vow was a statement of determination at the time, not a current career update. The Associated Press reported that his cause of death was not immediately available, so the available reports do not establish a connection between his emphysema and his death.
What did David Lynch say about his emphysema?
In remarks from a Sight and Sound interview, reproduced by The Guardian in August 2024, Lynch said smoking over many years had led to emphysema. “I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long, and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not,” he said.
He described being able to walk only a short distance before running out of oxygen. He also said he feared getting ill, including catching a cold, because of the risks he associated with illness during the COVID era. Those were his account of his own circumstances and concerns in 2024, not a general prognosis for people with emphysema.
Why did the diagnosis affect his filmmaking?
Lynch said his condition limited his ability to work in person. He valued being physically present during filmmaking, so directing remotely was not his preference. He said he would try remote directing if necessary, but the 2024 reports do not establish that he later directed a film remotely.
