David Lynch and Chrystabell’s Cellophane Memories was released by Sacred Bones Records on August 2, 2024. The ten-track album grew out of an experimental studio collaboration in which Lynch wrote lyrics during sessions, Chrystabell sang and worked the recording controls, and Lynch produced and edited the material.
What is Cellophane Memories?
Cellophane Memories is an album credited to singer Chrystabell and filmmaker and musician David Lynch. Sacred Bones Records released it on August 2, 2024, under catalog number SBR344. The album’s original announcement called it a new collaboration; that wording describes the 2024 announcement, not a forthcoming release.

Lynch explained the title in a July 9, 2024 Los Angeles Times interview: “This music has a transparency. The different voices are each transparent to hear the other voice, to hear the other thing. … So it’s like cellophane and it conjures memories.” The image points to voices and musical layers that remain distinct while allowing one another through.
How did Lynch and Chrystabell make the album?
Their process was based on experimentation rather than a conventional setup in which a finished lyric and melody are brought to a recording session. Chrystabell told the Los Angeles Times that Lynch wrote lyrics as needed, while she supplied vocal melodies and operated the recording controls. Lynch produced and edited the sessions. In a BFI interview, she likewise described singing words Lynch wrote in the moment and his shaping the material through experimental editing.

Lynch said accidents were part of the process. “They conjure another kind of beauty, and it’s magical. And Chrystabell is perfect for this,” he told the Los Angeles Times, referring to the results of experimentation.
What is the story behind the album’s forest vision?
The artist and label pages present a forest vision as the album’s origin story. Lynch later qualified that account in a BFI interview updated January 17, 2025, calling the publicity blurb fanciful and saying, “It was inspired by experimenting and it all came out of experimenting.” He added, “I do walk in the woods in my mind.” The forest image is therefore best understood as part of the album’s evocative presentation, not a literal account Lynch confirmed as its origin.
