A strong starting route through David Johansen’s music is the New York Dolls’ “Personality Crisis,” “Looking for a Kiss” and “Frankenstein,” followed by his solo “Funky but Chic” and Buster Poindexter’s “Hot Hot Hot.” This is an editorial introduction, not a definitive ranking: Johansen’s work moves between ragged rock, solo hard rock, theatrical lounge and blues.
Best New York Dolls songs to start with
Johansen fronted the New York Dolls, and the Associated Press obituary names these three songs among the band’s repertoire. They offer a concise introduction to his work with the group; the sources establish their significance, not an objective order of quality.
“Personality Crisis”
A first stop for the Dolls’ ragged, theatrical rock. Johansen described the group as “a rock and roll band” that wrote “some really good songs” in a GRAMMY.com interview.
“Looking for a Kiss”
Another of the band’s key starting tracks, named alongside “Personality Crisis” by the Associated Press.

“Frankenstein”
Complete the introductory trio with this Dolls song, also highlighted in the AP’s account of Johansen’s career.
Best David Johansen solo songs and recordings
“Solo” covers more than one sound in Johansen’s career. His own-name rock recordings, Buster Poindexter’s lounge persona and his later blues work with the Harry Smiths are distinct chapters, not one continuous Dolls-style sound.

“Funky but Chic” — David Johansen
This is the clearest bridge between the Dolls and Johansen’s solo career. He and Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain wrote it for the band before its first breakup; Johansen later recorded it as a solo single. In a 2011 interview republished by Louder, Johansen said the song had “finally come home” by becoming part of his solo work.
AllMusic identifies the self-titled David Johansen (1978) as his first solo album after the Dolls broke up and describes its sound as more accessible hard rock. “Funky but Chic” is a useful entry point to that own-name chapter, as well as a song with roots in the band.

“Hot Hot Hot” — Buster Poindexter
Johansen’s Buster Poindexter persona takes a different direction: theatrical lounge and swing rather than the Dolls’ band-driven rock. AllMusic says the 1987 Buster Poindexter album yielded the enduring hit “Hot Hot Hot,” a cover of Arrow’s song. It is the essential pick if “best solo” means a song that represents his best-known alternate performance identity.
David Johansen and the Harry Smiths
For a roots-and-blues side of his recorded work, explore David Johansen and the Harry Smiths. In a 2001 NPR Fresh Air interview, Johansen discussed the album as straight blues, including material by blues artists and songs drawn from Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. This chapter broadens the picture beyond both Dolls rock and Buster Poindexter, though it is not represented here by a single ranked track.

How to read “best” across Johansen’s career
These five songs are a listening path across three recording identities, not a cross-career chart. The Dolls selections introduce his band work; “Funky but Chic” connects the band to his own-name solo career; and “Hot Hot Hot” captures the Buster Poindexter persona. The Harry Smiths material points to a further blues direction.
Johansen died in 2025 at age 75, according to the Associated Press. In that report, AP quoted a 2023 reflection from him: “At some point in my life, I decided: ‘Just sing the (expletive) song. With whatever you got.’”
