The tension between Frasier and Niles Crane was part of the comedy; interviews and reporting about the actors point instead to professional respect and affection. The available public record does not establish that they never disagreed privately, but it does not substantiate a public rupture or prolonged estrangement.
What has Kelsey Grammer said about David Hyde Pierce?
In a 2025 PBS interview, Grammer described Pierce as the brother he felt he had not had. “I mean, I didn’t really have a relationship with my brothers, they were half brothers, my relationship with David Hyde Pierce was my brother relationship,” he said. That is Grammer’s own characterization of their bond, rather than proof of every detail of their private lives. PBS interview.

A 2022 Guardian profile also reported that Grammer called Pierce “the brother he never had” and described the Frasier cast as notably close. The Guardian’s profile.
Did the actors have the same rivalry as Frasier and Niles?
No evidence in these accounts supports treating the Crane brothers’ competitiveness as a record of the actors’ relationship. Frasier and Niles’ rivalry was a defining fictional dynamic, explored in a 2018 oral history of the show. Pierce also discussed parallels between his and Grammer’s acting backgrounds and John Mahoney’s more restrained style; those creative comparisons do not establish personal conflict. What did they say about working together?
Contemporary comments from 1994 show professional respect early in the series. Pierce said Grammer’s personal life had not affected the quality of his work and described him as good-hearted and focused on the script. Grammer praised Pierce’s talent, saying, “I never in my life want to back away from someone who’s gifted and talented.” The Los Angeles Times, 1994.
These remarks are evidence of how they spoke about one another at that time; they do not settle every aspect of a long working relationship. Taken alongside Grammer’s later brother-like description, they support a picture of public respect and closeness, not a confirmed feud.

The show gave viewers an unusually vivid sibling rivalry to compare with the actors’ off-screen rapport. Frasier aired on NBC from 1993 to 2004 and ran for 11 seasons. ABC News reported that 33 million viewers watched the finale when it aired on May 13, 2004; that is a historical report about the finale, not a current audience figure. ABC News’ 2013 reunion report.
A later Frasier revival was covered by the Los Angeles Times in 2023 as a new series airing on Paramount+. That report establishes the revival’s context at the time, not its present streaming availability. The Los Angeles Times’ 2023 coverage.
