Violent Night 2 has a confirmed story setup, returning creative team and announced theatrical date: Universal Pictures Canada lists it for December 4, while TheWrap’s June 2025 report identifies the year as 2026. David Harbour is back as Santa, who must defend a mall after losing his magic. The date is an announced schedule, not a guarantee that every regional release plan will remain unchanged.
What is the Violent Night 2 update?
The sequel has moved beyond development discussions into a defined film with an official synopsis, returning leads, an expanded cast and trailer-era promotion. Universal Pictures Canada’s official listing describes a new setting and conflict; TheWrap reported the December 4, 2026 theatrical date in June 2025.
David Harbour reprises Santa Claus. Tommy Wirkola returns to direct, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller returning as screenwriters. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch again produce for 87North.
Announced cast
Alongside Harbour, the announced cast includes Kristen Bell, Jared Harris, Joe Pantoliano, Daniela Melchior, Andrew Bachelor and Maxwell Friedman. Bell plays Mrs. Claus; Harris plays the gangster threatening the mall’s merchants.

What is the sequel about?
The first film centered on a hostage-held home; the sequel shifts the action to the Silver Bell Mall. Universal’s synopsis says Santa has forgotten Christmas’s true meaning and lost his magic. When a gangster terrorizes the mall’s merchants, Santa must find another way to protect the community and calls in Mrs. Claus as backup.
The premise changes the practical challenge for Santa: the official synopsis establishes that he cannot rely on his magic, but it does not spell out exactly how Mrs. Claus fights or how the conflict ends.
A larger setting and character group
Producer Kelly McCormick has described the mall as a larger arena for action, decorations and a broader group of characters. She said Santa gathers “a group of broken toys that also need healing,” framing the ensemble as part of the film’s emotional thread rather than simply a larger fight scene. In a separate interview, McCormick put the central identity question this way: “this one is about who he is in the world, if he isn’t Santa?”
Director Tommy Wirkola described the intended scope in an August 2026 interview: “a bigger world, more of a bigger character canvas, and I would say also kind of a bigger story.” He also said the filmmakers wanted to preserve what audiences liked about the first film while adding new material and expanding the mythology. Those are the creators’ stated aims, not a measure of the finished film’s quality.
How does it connect to the first Violent Night?
The structural contrast is clear: the original’s rescue unfolded in one house, while the sequel takes Santa into a public mall community. TheWrap reported that the first Violent Night earned $76 million worldwide against a $20 million budget; those are figures reported by TheWrap in 2025, not independently audited studio figures.
Wirkola has said the sequel includes material about Santa’s Viking backstory that was cut from the first film. GamesRadar+ also reported that filming took place around a real mall in Winnipeg, Canada. That production location does not establish that the fictional Silver Bell Mall is in Winnipeg.

When does Violent Night 2 come out?
The announced U.S. theatrical date is December 4, 2026, according to TheWrap’s June 11, 2025 report. Universal Pictures Canada’s current listing says “IN THEATRES DECEMBER 4” without displaying a year in that line. Local release dates and bookings may differ, so check regional listings as the date approaches.
How the sequel moved from development to production
In December 2024, returning writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller said they were polishing a script and wanted to bring in some Western influence. Wirkola said the team wanted to expand the world while keeping its humor. In June 2025, Wirkola confirmed to Norway’s VG that he would direct and said production was expected to begin in September in Canada. Later reporting placed filming around a Winnipeg mall.
