At announcement, Gilmour called it his first album of new material in nine years. The record was made over five months in Brighton and London.
How was the album made?
Gilmour co-produced Luck and Strange with Charlie Andrew. Gilmour said Andrew’s directness was a welcome change from people deferring to his history, recalling that Andrew questioned whether a song needed a guitar solo and whether every track had to fade out. Gilmour described him as “very direct and not in any way overawed.”

Polly Samson wrote most of the lyrics. She described their perspective as “being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour said he and Samson spent time during and after lockdown talking and thinking about those subjects.
What songs and musicians are on Luck and Strange?
The announcement described eight new tracks plus a reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ “Between Two Points.” Romany Gilmour sings, plays harp and takes lead vocals on that song; Gabriel Gilmour contributes backing vocals.

The album’s official standard CD listing gives this sequence: “Black Cat,” “Luck and Strange,” “The Piper’s Call,” “A Single Spark,” “Vita Brevis,” “Between Two Points,” “Dark and Velvet Nights,” “Sings” and “Scattered.” That edition also lists “Yes, I Have Ghosts” and “Luck and Strange (Original Barn Jam)” as bonus tracks. The announcement said “The Piper’s Call” would be the first track released.
Other named performers include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass; Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums; Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards; and Will Gardner, who handled string and choral arrangements.

Richard Wright’s contribution
The title track includes the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, using a recording from a 2007 jam in a barn at Gilmour’s house. Some contributions to the album also grew out of the Gilmour family’s 2020 and 2021 lockdown livestreams.
Cover artwork
Anton Corbijn photographed and designed the cover. Its image was inspired by a lyric Charlie Gilmour wrote for “Scattered,” the album’s final track.

What formats were released?
At release, Gilmour’s official page directed listeners to CD, LP, Blu-ray, Deluxe Box Set and digital versions. This documents the formats offered at launch, not their current retail availability. The official release page lists those options.
The official store’s standard CD listing specifies the nine-track album and two bonus tracks. The Deluxe CD Box Set listing describes two CDs, a Blu-ray and a 72-page hardback photo book; the page showed the set as sold out when accessed, so its current stock should be checked directly.
