How David Dobrik became a YouTube star
Dobrik first gained attention on Vine, then began vlogging on YouTube in 2015. His short, tightly edited videos drew on a recurring group of friends and collaborators known as the Vlog Squad. The format made the group itself part of the appeal: viewers returned not only for Dobrik’s jokes, but for familiar faces and escalating stunts.
By March 2021, The Washington Post reported that Dobrik’s videos had more than 18.7 million subscribers. That figure describes the scale of his audience at the time, not a current subscriber count. The Washington Post’s March 2021 account also placed his success in the context of a video-making environment where participants could feel pressure to take part.
What the 2021 allegation involved
In March 2021, media reports described a woman’s allegation of sexual assault involving former Vlog Squad member Dom Zeglaitis, who posted as Durte Dom, in connection with a video shoot. The allegation was reported in coverage of the group and its videos; it was not a criminal finding established by the sources cited here. The allegation concerned Zeglaitis. It should not be recast as a claim that Dobrik personally committed the alleged assault.

The controversy also raised questions about Dobrik’s role as the group’s influential creator and about the circumstances in which people were invited to participate in videos. Those criticisms concern leadership and filming dynamics; they are distinct from the allegation against Zeglaitis.
What Dobrik said and what changed for his businesses
Dobrik published two apology videos in March 2021. In his second apology, he said he believed the woman who made the allegation and acknowledged that his position could create an unfair dynamic for people invited to film. The Washington Post reported him saying: “I was completely disconnected from that fact that when people were invited to film videos with us, especially videos that relied on shock for views, or whatever it was, that I was creating an unfair power dynamic.” That statement was Dobrik’s reflection on the filming environment; it did not itself resolve the allegation.

In the same apology, Dobrik addressed former Vlog Squad member Seth Francois, saying, “I’m sorry to Seth,” and, “I missed the mark on that one.” Those remarks concerned Francois and should not be confused with the separate allegation involving Zeglaitis. The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times’ March 23, 2021 coverage reported on the apology.
The business consequences reported at the time were concrete but should not be stretched into claims about exact financial losses or permanent exclusion from business. HelloFresh and SeatGeek said they were no longer working with Dobrik or the Vlog Squad. Dobrik announced he would step down from the board of Dispo, the photo-sharing app he co-founded, and investor Spark Capital said it would sever ties with the company. Jeff Wittek’s injury was a separate controversy
Another issue involved Vlog Squad member Jeff Wittek, who was seriously injured during an excavator stunt filmed for Dobrik-related content. The incident occurred in 2020 and became a public controversy in 2021. Wittek later discussed it in a documentary series, and contemporaneous coverage described the stunt and injury.
This incident is separate from the allegation involving Zeglaitis. Reporting and Wittek’s documentary brought questions about the stunt and responsibility into public view, but the cited sources do not establish a final court ruling or adjudicated finding of responsibility. Why the controversies altered Dobrik’s public image
The Vlog Squad’s appeal depended on a sense of spontaneous fun, but the group’s videos were made in an environment shaped by Dobrik’s influence and the pursuit of attention-grabbing footage. The March 2021 reporting made that imbalance harder to ignore: participants’ experiences, the allegation involving a collaborator, and criticism of how filming was managed became part of the story alongside the entertainment.
The reported sponsor decisions and Dispo board change showed immediate reputational and business consequences. They do not establish the total financial impact, a permanent ban from sponsorships, or that Dobrik’s career ended. The sources cited here focus on the 2021 developments; they do not establish his complete present-day activity or the final status of Wittek’s litigation.
