David Bowie’s estate was reported to be worth about $100 million when he died in 2016. A separate 2022 deal for his songwriting and publishing rights was later estimated by news outlets at more than $250 million, but Warner Chappell did not disclose the price. Those figures measure different things; neither establishes the estate’s current net worth.
What was David Bowie worth when he died?
Contemporary reporting on Bowie’s will put his estate at about $100 million at the time of his death on January 10, 2016, aged 69. The estimate was attributed to the will, but the document did not itemize the estate’s finances. It is best understood as a reported, probate-era estimate—not a detailed public accounting of assets and liabilities. CBS News, reporting from the Associated Press, published the figure on January 30, 2016. The American Bar Association also described the estate as estimated at as high as $100 million in its discussion of celebrity estate planning.
How the 2016 and 2022 figures differ
| Figure | What it describes | What is known about the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| About $100 million | Reported value of Bowie’s estate around his death in 2016 | CBS/AP attributed it to the will, which did not break down the finances. CBS News / Associated Press |
| At least $250 million (£185 million), or upwards of $250 million | Estimated value of the 2022 songwriting and publishing rights deal | Warner Chappell did not disclose the terms. The Guardian attributed its estimate to anonymous sources speaking to Variety; CBS/AFP reported trade-publication estimates. The Guardian; CBS News / AFP |
The 2022 estimate is not a revised net-worth statement. It concerns a rights transaction reported six years after Bowie’s death, not the total value of his estate or the amount beneficiaries ultimately retained. Adding it to the 2016 estimate would combine unlike figures and imply a current balance that the reporting does not establish.
What did the Bowie catalog sale include?
In January 2022, Warner Chappell Music acquired Bowie’s songwriting and publishing rights. The company did not announce a purchase price. The Guardian reported an estimate of at least $250 million (£185 million), citing anonymous sources speaking to Variety; CBS News, citing Agence France-Presse, described estimates as upwards of $250 million. These are reported estimates, not a confirmed price disclosed by Warner Chappell.

The deal should not be described as a sale of every Bowie asset or of all his music rights. Reporting treated the songwriting and publishing rights separately from recorded-music rights. Warner had separately added recordings from 2000 through 2016 to recordings it already handled from 1968 through 1999. The publishing-sale estimate therefore does not establish the value of the entire catalog, the estate’s remaining property, or proceeds still held by the estate.
How did David Bowie’s will provide for his family?
The will was filed under Bowie’s legal name, David Robert Jones. CBS/AP reported that it left his SoHo home to his wife, Iman, and gave her half of the remainder of the estate. His son Duncan Jones and daughter Alexandria “Lexi” Jones were each allocated 25 percent of the remainder, alongside separate bequests. These percentages refer to the remainder, not to 25 percent of every gross asset.

The American Bar Association’s account adds an important qualification: the residuary shares were structured through trusts. It describes 50 percent for Iman in a marital trust, 25 percent for Duncan outright, and 25 percent for Lexi in trust, with terms governing income, principal, and the remainder. That structure means the will’s stated shares should not be simplified into a claim that every beneficiary received an unrestricted cash payment in those percentages.

A separate 2023 announcement said the V&A acquired more than 80,000 items from Bowie’s archive. That number describes the scale of a cultural collection, not a cash valuation or evidence of the estate’s net worth. The Associated Press reported the acquisition on February 23, 2023.
