Dave Scott, the hip-hop choreographer known for his work on So You Think You Can Dance, has died at 52. TVLine reported his death on June 18, 2025; a New York Times obituary republished by The Salt Lake Tribune says he died June 16 in Las Vegas. No cause of death was shared in the contemporaneous report.

What is known about Dave Scott’s death

TVLine’s June 18, 2025 report said Scott had died at 52 and quoted a statement shared by his family through his Instagram account. The New York Times obituary by Alex Williams, republished by The Salt Lake Tribune on July 4, reported that Scott died June 16 in Las Vegas. The Television Academy’s profile instead lists June 30, 2025, as his passing date, so the exact date is not consistent across the sources.

TVLine said no cause of death was shared with the announcement. The sources cited here do not establish a cause, so none should be inferred.

What Dave Scott was known for

Scott was a hip-hop choreographer whose work spanned television, film, artist development and live performance. His best-known television association was So You Think You Can Dance. TVLine reported that his hip-hop work on the show began in Season 3, while his agency résumé lists work across multiple seasons.

His agency résumé, dated July 11, 2019, also lists award-show, tour, music-video and game work, including supervising choreography for The Hip-Hop Dance Experience.

Tributes to Scott

The family statement quoted by TVLine remembered Scott for “his warmth, kindness and spirit,” saying he had touched many lives.

Dick Clark Productions and Fox, in a statement provided to TVLine, called him “a gifted choreographer” whose creativity, warmth and spirit left “an indelible mark on the dance world” and on those involved with So You Think You Can Dance.

One way to explore his choreography

For a look at Scott demonstrating dance moves, Sony Pictures’ official page describes You Got Served: Take It to the Streets as a DVD featuring Scott and other performers. The DVD Journal describes it as an instructional video hosted by Scott, with routines connected to the film. It is a separate instructional release, not a substitute for his television performances.
