Steven Van Zandt and his band joined her, along with Paul Shaffer, her former bandleader on David Letterman’s show. Love had called the booking “unbelievable” in a December 11 interview with PEOPLE.
What happened on The Tonight Show?
Love performed her holiday classic on Fallon’s show on December 18, 2024. The appearance brought her back to late-night television after a decade away from that stage. LateNighter reported that Steven Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul accompanied her, with Paul Shaffer also joining the performance.
Why did Love return to late-night TV?
Love told PEOPLE that the opportunity followed a conversation with Jimmy Fallon when she appeared on The View. She recalled Fallon asking why she had not been on his show. “The time just seemed right to do it … it hasn’t been anything to do with really one particular thing,” she said.
Love also described her departure from The View as her own career decision, not a falling-out. She said she loved the hosts, but felt that having others sing alongside her limited the song and that she wanted to decide how to perform it.

How does the performance connect to Love’s Letterman tradition?
Love’s late-night Christmas performances began on Late Night with David Letterman in 1986. The song later became an annual holiday feature on Letterman’s CBS Late Show. Her final Christmas performance there was in December 2014, according to LateNighter; the program itself ended in 2015. Love later made holiday appearances on The View before her 2024 Fallon appearance.
When was “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” released?
The song first appeared in 1963 on A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, according to the Associated Press. The album, released November 22, 1963, paired Christmas standards with original songs. Love also sang “White Christmas” and “Marshmallow World” on it. The record took years to become widely celebrated, and the song became especially associated with Letterman’s holiday broadcasts in the 1990s.
