It sets up a crime mystery, a Jedi Master confronting a dangerous warrior from his past, and a red-bladed opponent whose identity the trailer does not reveal.
What is The Acolyte about?
Lucasfilm describes the series as a mystery-thriller. A shocking crime spree draws respected Jedi Master Sol, played by Lee Jung-jae, into conflict with a dangerous warrior from his past, played by Amandla Stenberg. As the investigation unfolds, clues lead toward sinister forces, and the official synopsis warns that appearances can be misleading. Lucasfilm’s series page gives the premise without resolving the mystery.

What does the first trailer show?
The trailer opens with Sol addressing younglings: “Close your eyes. Your eyes can deceive you. We must not trust them.” That lesson about perception frames a sequence of training, a busy village, and confrontations involving Jedi Master Indara and Mae. Near the end, Jedi face an unseen opponent carrying a red-bladed lightsaber. The footage teases a threat; it does not establish who is behind the mask or explain the larger mystery.
Lucasfilm’s official announcement presents the trailer and its tagline, “In an age of light, a darkness rises.” The announcement also introduces the series’ cast and creative team.

When and where does it fit in Star Wars?
The story is set during the High Republic, approximately 100 years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, according to Lucasfilm. The trailer was the first live-action look at this era, which had previously appeared in publishing and animation. That makes the series a different point in the timeline from the familiar prequel-era stories: its premise centers on a Jedi investigation while the Order is in a position of strength, rather than a conflict already defined by the events of the films. Lucasfilm’s launch report provides the chronology and context.
Who appears in the trailer?
The trailer announcement names a broad ensemble of Jedi, allies, and other figures. Lucasfilm’s character descriptions identify them as follows:
Rank #2
- Mae (Amandla Stenberg): a mysterious warrior.
- Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss): Jedi Masters.
- Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen): a Padawan.
- Kelnacca (Joonas Suotamo): a Wookiee Jedi Master.
- Vernestra Rwoh: a Jedi Master.
- Yord: a Jedi Knight.
- Qimir: a smuggler.
- Mother Aniseya: leader of a coven of witches.
The announced cast also includes Manny Jacinto, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, and Dean-Charles Chapman. Leslye Headland created and showruns the series and directed its first two episodes. For the official announcement and descriptions, see Lucasfilm’s trailer announcement.
What did Leslye Headland point out in the trailer?
In an interview with StarWars.com, showrunner Leslye Headland singled out a small character moment: “Vernestra Rwoh opening a door might be my favorite part of the trailer,” she said. “It’s like ‘What’s up? Listen, I haven’t opened a door in 100 years,’” Headland added with a laugh. The remark is a playful response to a brief trailer detail, not an explanation of the series’ central mystery. What was announced at launch?
Lucasfilm announced that The Acolyte would premiere on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with two episodes. Its official series page lists eight episode guides and a TV-14 rating. Those are launch and page details; they do not establish current streaming availability in every country or subscriber tier. The official series page has the episode guide.
Lucasfilm also said the trailer drew 51.3 million views in its first 24 hours, describing that figure in March 2024 as a digital-only record for a Lucasfilm Disney+ series at the time. It is Lucasfilm’s historical launch claim, not a measure of current viewership. The March 2024 report gives the claim and its context.

Optional companion books
At its July 2024 Lucasfilm panel, the company announced Star Wars: The Acolyte: Wayseeker, an adult novel by Justina Ireland exploring Vernestra Rwoh’s story, and The Art of The Acolyte, a behind-the-scenes book covering concept art, costumes, and creatures. The announcements offer extra context for interested readers; neither is needed to follow the trailer. The announcement does not establish current stock or edition availability.
