Dark Winds Season 3 premiered on AMC and AMC+ on March 9, 2025, and all eight episodes have now aired. The season follows two connected investigations: Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Sgt. Jim Chee search for two missing boys, while Bernadette Manuelito’s new Border Patrol assignment draws her into a human- and drug-smuggling conspiracy.
Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten remain the central trio, but Season 3 also adds Jenna Elfman, Bruce Greenwood and Raoul Max Trujillo to the expanding crime story. Here is who plays whom, how the characters connect and which cast listings should not be confused with Season 3 roles.

The returning main cast
Zahn McClarnon as Lt. Joe Leaphorn
McClarnon returns as Joe Leaphorn, the lieutenant leading the Navajo Tribal Police investigation into the disappearance of two boys. The case is only one part of his Season 3 story. Six months after the events of Season 2, Leaphorn is still carrying the consequences of leaving mine owner B.J. Vines in the desert.
That decision continues to affect Joe’s judgment, his work and his marriage to Emma. The character’s investigation therefore runs alongside a psychological and moral struggle: he is trying to perform his duty while living with guilt, grief and the knowledge that his past choices have not stayed buried.

Kiowa Gordon as Sgt. Jim Chee
Kiowa Gordon plays Jim Chee, now a sergeant and Leaphorn’s right-hand man in the Navajo Tribal Police. Chee takes on more responsibility in the missing-boys investigation, but his promotion does not erase the unresolved trauma tied to Shorty Bowlegs.
Season 3 places Chee between professional responsibility and personal anger. His work with Leaphorn also keeps him connected to Bernadette, even after her transfer separates them geographically.
Jessica Matten as Bernadette “Bern” Manuelito
Bernadette Manuelito has left the Navajo Tribal Police and joined Border Patrol, taking a post more than 500 miles from home. The move gives her a different professional environment, but it does not provide an escape from danger.

- Dark Winds - Season 4 [DVD]
Her new assignment exposes a conspiracy involving human smuggling and drug trafficking. Bernadette’s storyline initially develops separately from Leaphorn and Chee’s missing-person case, although the investigations eventually begin to overlap. The transfer also changes her relationship with Chee by adding distance, competing loyalties and new institutional pressures.

Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn
Deanna Allison returns as Emma Leaphorn, Joe’s wife. Emma is dealing with a husband who remains consumed by the death of their son and by his decision to abandon B.J. Vines.
Their relationship is strained rather than presented as a simple source of support. Joe’s guilt affects the home as directly as it affects the police investigation, giving Emma an important role in showing the personal cost of his unresolved grief.

Elva Guerra as Sally Growing Thunder
Elva Guerra returns as Sally Growing Thunder, a series regular from the earlier seasons. AMC’s Season 3 material identifies Guerra among the returning cast, although the season’s main promotional focus is on the connected arcs of Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito.
Returning supporting and guest characters
| Actor | Character | Why the character matters |
|---|---|---|
| John Diehl | B.J. Vines | The mine owner whose presumed death remains central to Joe’s guilt and mental state. |
| Jeri Ryan | Rosemary Vines | B.J. Vines’ wife. |
| Nicholas Logan | Colton Wolf | A returning figure from the Vines storyline. |
| A. Martinez | Acting Chief Gordo Sena | Acting chief of the Scarborough Police Department. |
| Rainn Wilson | Devoted Dan | Recurring supporting character. |
| Jeremiah Bitsui | Hoski | Returning supporting character. |
| Eugene Brave Rock | Frank Nakai | Returning supporting character. |
| Noah Emmerich | Whitover | Returning character credited in the Season 3 cast listings. |
B.J. Vines remains especially important even though the character’s Season 2 fate is already known. His absence—and the question of what Joe did and did not do—continues to shape the season’s emotional storyline. Rosemary Vines and Colton Wolf keep that thread connected to the wider investigation.

How the main characters connect
- Leaphorn and Chee: They lead the Navajo Tribal Police investigation into the disappearance of two boys. Chee’s new rank gives him greater responsibility beside Leaphorn.
- Chee and Manuelito: Bernadette’s move to Border Patrol puts physical distance between the two former colleagues and romantic partners. Their separate investigations eventually reconnect.
- Joe and Emma: Joe’s grief over his son’s death and his guilt regarding B.J. Vines create serious pressure inside the Leaphorn marriage.
- Manuelito and Border Patrol: Bernadette’s career change places her inside a different legal and cultural setting, where she encounters corruption, smuggling and drug trafficking.
- Chee and Shorty Bowlegs: Shorty embodies a painful part of Chee’s past and challenges his attempt to become a steadier, more confident police leader.
What not to include in a Season 3 cast list
Several online listings blur the line between current and future cast members. Franka Potente’s Irene Vaggan and Chaske Spencer’s Sonny are Season 4 characters, not Season 3 roles. They should not be added to a Season 3 cast guide.
Season 3 is also not an upcoming six-episode season. It premiered on March 9, 2025, contains eight episodes and concluded with “Béésh Łį́į (Iron Horse).” The distinction matters because some early articles and database pages still carry outdated details.
