What happens in the final scene?
After the crisis created by the many Jasons makes their situation untenable, Jason, Daniela, and Charlie enter the box together. They travel through its corridor of doors, and Charlie chooses one. The three of them step through into a new world.

The scene confirms that the family leaves their current situation together. It does not identify the world they enter or establish what life there will be like.
Why the destination is left unknown
In an interview covered by RadioTimes.com on June 26, 2024, Crouch explained that the family’s precise destination was left undefined. The ending was planned from the outset; viewers are not expected to recognize the door as leading to a particular world.

So the direct answer to “Which parallel world is that?” is: the series does not say. Calling it a numbered world, a place seen earlier in the season, or a guaranteed utopia goes beyond what the finale establishes.
How the box works in the show
The box opens onto a corridor of doors, with each door leading to a different world under the series’ fictional rules. In a May 8, 2024 TIME interview, Crouch summarized the mechanism: “All you really have to know is, you go into the box, you take a drug, the box becomes an infinite corridor, and behind each door in that corridor is a different world.”

That is an explanation of the show’s premise, not a demonstrated account of real-world quantum mechanics. TIME describes the corridor as a physical manifestation of human consciousness, but that framing belongs to the series’ fiction.
What the ending confirms—and what it doesn’t
- Confirmed: Charlie chooses the door, and Jason, Daniela, and Charlie enter the new world together.
- Not confirmed: The world’s name or number, whether it appeared earlier, what conditions await them, or whether they will be safe there.
- Creator’s stated intent: The family’s exact destination remains unresolved.
How the series relates to the novel
Apple TV describes Dark Matter as a science-fiction thriller based on Blake Crouch’s bestseller; its official US listing includes the Season 1 episodes. The source novel, Dark Matter, was published in 2016, but the television adaptation makes its own story choices. The book can offer another way into Crouch’s story, not a definitive guide to every scene in the series.
