In a September 2020 recap, Dascha Polanco described embracing her Blackness, Indigenous identity, and Caribbean roots, while Garcia spoke about defining her body and identity on her own terms.
What was the #LatinxTheMosaic panel?
The virtual panel was hosted by Dany Garcia as an open conversation about racism and colorism in the Latinx community. It was announced for September 22, 2020, during Latinx Heritage Month, against the backdrop of the 2020 public conversation around Black Lives Matter. The announcement said it would stream on Facebook; it does not establish whether a recording is available now. People en Español’s September 15, 2020 announcement described the event’s planned focus.
The roster in the subsequent recap included Garcia, actress Dascha Polanco, TV reporter Lilliana Vazquez, Peloton fitness programming executive Robin Arzón, filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, and Fordham University professor Tanya Kateri Hernandez. Lena Hansen’s September 23 recap in People en Español reports the participants’ perspectives; it is not a complete transcript.
What did Dany Garcia say about body image?
Garcia spoke about the pressure to measure Latina bodies against narrow expectations—whether those expectations favor curves or slimness. She described taking pride in being herself as a Latina Cuban bodybuilder and in choosing how her body looks, rather than allowing stereotypes to define it.
