Danny Denzongpa said the emotional simplicity of Bioscopewala drew him to the film—not merely the chance to play an Afghan character. Directed by Deb Medhekar, the 2018 film reworks Rabindranath Tagore’s Kabuliwala, shifting its central figure from a dry-fruit seller to a bioscope operator. Denzongpa’s interviews about the film also illuminate a career in which he sought alternatives to the repetitive roles he once felt were defining his work.

What Bioscopewala changes from Kabuliwala

Tagore’s Kabuliwala centres on an Afghan dry-fruit seller whose friendship with a Bengali girl recalls his own daughter. In Deb Medhekar’s film, the girl is grown up and sets out to find the bioscope operator and his daughter. Denzongpa said the film moves the action to the early 1980s and changes the protagonist’s occupation from dry-fruit seller to bioscope operator. In a May 23, 2018 interview with The Indian Express/PTI, he acknowledged the changes but said, “Though there are changes from the original story, the soul of the story is intact and that’s what attracted me to this film.”

The difference is not just a change of profession or period. Tagore’s story and Bimal Roy’s 1961 Hindi adaptation centre on the bond between the Afghan visitor and a child. Bioscopewala begins from that emotional premise but gives the grown-up girl a search of her own. The result is a reworking rather than a scene-by-scene retelling.

Why Denzongpa accepted the role

In a phone interview with Nandini Ramnath, published by Scroll on May 14, 2018, Denzongpa described the story’s plain emotional appeal: “I found the story to be emotional and nice and simple. I like simplicity. I don’t like gimmickry.” He said the Afghan identity of the character was not what attracted him above all.

He had wanted to make his own version of Kabuliwala after seeing Bimal Roy’s 1961 film while he was at school, but a producer turned down his proposal. Scroll reported that the later project was written and produced by Sunil Doshi and that Denzongpa took the lead after it did not proceed with Amitabh Bachchan. Director Deb Medhekar also discussed his choice of protagonist and casting in an interview about reworking Tagore’s story.

A career shaped by dissatisfaction with repetition

Denzongpa’s comments about Bioscopewala fit a longer pattern of seeking work that felt different from the roles he had been doing. Scroll’s 2018 profile describes his frustration with repetitive potboilers and action parts. He recalled working on several productions at once and feeling that scripts and roles were repeating.

One response was Phir Wahi Raat (1980), which he wrote and directed. It marked a deliberate move in a new direction rather than another acting assignment of the same kind. The shift helps explain why he has described following personal interest rather than maintaining a relentless production pace.

What “five decades” means in the 2018 coverage

The five-decade description belongs to contemporary coverage of Bioscopewala, not a verified update of Denzongpa’s career through today. Scroll used that framing in its May 2018 headline. Hindustan Times described his career as spanning more than four-and-a-half decades at the time. The Indian Express/PTI interview said he had been a Hindi-film regular since 1971.

Those are dated descriptions from 2018, and they should not be mistaken for a complete filmography or a current count of his years in the industry. Denzongpa also offered his own reading of changing Hindi-film trends: he said cinema had moved from the action-and-revenge films prominent in the 1970s and 1980s toward different commercial and character-led directions. That is his perspective, not an industry-wide measurement.

His working philosophy: follow impulse

Asked about his pace and choices, Denzongpa told Scroll, “I follow my heart, and I follow my impulse. I don’t plan.” The remark makes his account of Bioscopewala more than a story about a coveted character: he was drawn to the adaptation’s simplicity and emotional centre, while the broader career he described was guided by whether a project felt worth doing.

When to read or watch the earlier versions

Readers who want to trace the adaptation can compare Tagore’s original story, Bimal Roy’s 1961 Hindi film, and Medhekar’s Bioscopewala along four useful lines: the protagonist’s occupation, the period, the girl’s age, and how much each version changes the plot while retaining its emotional idea. A print edition of Tagore’s story is a natural starting point for that comparison; no particular edition or current listing is established here.

Bioscopewala was scheduled for release on May 25, 2018, according to Scroll. That date places the interviews and career descriptions in their historical context; this account does not establish the film’s present-day streaming or physical-media availability, or Denzongpa’s post-2018 career developments.
