How was Danielle Fishel’s cancer found?
Fishel said she felt healthy and had no lump when she went for the mammogram. A reminder for her yearly screening prompted her to make the appointment. The cancer was found through that routine imaging, according to her August 2024 disclosure, reported by CBS News and the Los Angeles Times.
That is Fishel’s account of her own diagnosis, not a general description of how breast cancer presents. She used the experience to encourage people to keep up with regular checkups and screening.
What type of cancer did Danielle Fishel have?
On August 19, 2024, Fishel announced on the Pod Meets World podcast that she had ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. She called it “technically stage zero,” but also specified the fuller pathology description: “high-grade DCIS with microinvasion.” Both details matter; the stage-zero phrase should not replace or erase the microinvasion qualifier she reported.

At the time, Fishel said she was still learning what care she would need and did not yet have all the answers. Her diagnosis and initial uncertainty were reported by CBS News, the Los Angeles Times and Variety Australia.

When she first disclosed the diagnosis, Fishel said she was planning surgery and follow-up care. She had not yet settled what the full treatment plan would be, including whether radiation would be part of it.

October 2024: two surgeries and a radiation decision
In an interview with Good Morning America published October 16, 2024, Fishel said she had undergone two surgeries, including a lumpectomy, over the previous three months. She said her recovery was going well and, “I no longer have cancer,” while explaining that she still had to decide about radiation. Her account was reported by Good Morning America.
January 2025: radiation completed
By January 2025, Fishel said she had completed 20 radiation treatments: 15 whole-breast treatments and five targeted treatments. She also described pain, a rash, itching and difficulty sleeping during treatment. These were effects she personally reported, not a prediction of what another patient will experience. Healthline reported her update.

Fishel’s public updates document her own diagnosis and treatment at the times she spoke about them. They do not disclose details such as the medication name, receptor status or surgical margins, and they do not establish a treatment plan for other people with DCIS or microinvasion. Her message was personal: she encouraged regular checkups and screening after a routine mammogram found cancer despite her feeling healthy and having no lump.
