Fatherhood has not changed the kinds of roles Daniel Radcliffe says he wants to play, but it has made time away from his family a bigger factor in deciding which work to take. In 2023, he expected to become more selective about how much he worked. By 2026, he was describing a higher bar for commitments that keep him from his family—and weighing a London production against the possibility of spending daytime hours with his son in New York.
How has fatherhood changed Daniel Radcliffe’s career?
Radcliffe and his partner, actor Erin Darke, welcomed a son in 2023. They have kept details about him private, and the reporting cited here does not give his name.
Radcliffe’s comments point to a shift in the amount and scheduling of work he considers, not a change in the kinds of acting roles he is interested in. In a July 2023 interview with E! News, he said becoming a father had not changed the types of parts he would pursue. He did, however, expect to be more selective about how much he worked because he enjoyed spending time with his son. He also made clear that he loved acting and did not intend to stop.
A 2026 El País report on a New York Times interview offers a later example. It says Radcliffe initially declined a London production of Every Brilliant Thing, in part because his family lives in New York, but was open to performing it on Broadway. Evening performances could leave him time with his son during the day. El País quoted him in Spanish: “La vara de lo que me mantiene alejado de mi familia definitivamente se ha vuelto más alta.” Translated from that report, he said the bar for what keeps him away from his family had “definitely become higher.”

The two accounts capture different moments: in 2023, Radcliffe was describing what he expected to change; in 2026, he was explaining how family time factored into a specific scheduling decision. They do not establish that fatherhood changed his preferred genres, ended his career, or reduced his output by a measurable amount.
What has Radcliffe said about being a father?
In the 2023 E! News interview, Radcliffe described parenthood as “a crazy thing, but it’s also really beautiful.” He said watching Darke become a mother had been incredible and that seeing his son smile could make him happy.

In coverage of his first six months as a father, The Independent reported his reflection on the emotional swings of parenting: a child might give you “the worst night of your life,” then smile in the morning and change how you feel about the night before. Radcliffe described the experience as “pretty cool” and called the year wonderful.
In June 2024, Us Weekly reported that Radcliffe called time with his son “a real privilege.” The same interview addressed whether he would want his son to act. His answer was conditional: “Not unless he really wants to. … If he can act and not be famous, great, then I can encourage it.” That was his response at the time, not a prediction of what his son will choose.
Why is Radcliffe cautious about his son acting or becoming famous?
Radcliffe knows child stardom from personal experience. In 2026 coverage of a WSJ Magazine interview, The Independent quoted him saying, “I honestly wouldn’t want my son to act or to become famous.” He also said he had been fortunate to have parents who gave him perspective and a film crew that cared about the young actors. He and his Harry Potter co-stars, he noted, had worked hard on themselves.
His remarks reflect concern about fame and the pressures of a child acting—not a blanket claim that his son must never perform. In 2024, he said he could encourage acting if his son wanted it and could do it without becoming famous; in the 2026 interview coverage, he expressed a stronger personal preference that his son avoid both acting and fame.

Will Daniel Radcliffe read Harry Potter to his son?
Radcliffe has said he would read the Harry Potter books with his son if the child wanted him to. In April 2024, he described the value of being known simply as “dad” and said he wanted to keep his fame from his son for as long as possible. Just Jared quoted him: “This is a beautiful time when he is not aware of me being anything else but his dad.”
In the 2026 El País account, Radcliffe said he would not push the books on his son and would let him find them in his own time. The report also described his ideal as his son encountering the story through the new television series rather than watching his father play Harry Potter. Those comments frame the books as an option for his son to discover, not an expectation Radcliffe plans to impose.
