Anemone is a father-and-son collaboration: Ronan Day-Lewis directed his feature debut and co-wrote the screenplay with his father, Daniel Day-Lewis, who stars. The drama follows two estranged brothers in Northern England, with their complicated past framing Daniel Day-Lewis’s return to the screen.

How Daniel and Ronan Day-Lewis made Anemone together

Ronan Day-Lewis directed Anemone, his feature debut, and wrote the screenplay with his father, Daniel Day-Lewis. Daniel also stars. Focus Features describes the drama as an exploration of ties among brothers, fathers and sons, and lists Sean Bean and Samantha Morton among its stars. The film was released on October 3, 2025. Focus Features’ film page provides the credits and release date.

In a nine-minute Sunday Morning interview with Jane Pauley, which CBS aired on October 5, 2025, Daniel and Ronan discussed making the film together. Ronan described entering the world of filmmaking alongside a parent whose work he had watched from the outside: “To be inside this realm that I had always been watching curiously from the outside was so intriguing.” CBS’s interview listing identifies the segment and its air date.

Daniel said the project made him reconsider whether he had shut himself off from acting. “It saddened me that I had perhaps ruled myself out of that when I decided to work on something else for a while,” he told the Associated Press. As the writing developed, he said, the work became harder to keep contained to the two of them: “And as we progressed through it, and it seemed less and less possible to contain it, like two fellas in a shed, it began to alarm me slightly.” These remarks describe how the project grew; they do not make the film’s fictional family history a portrait of the Day-Lewises. Jake Coyle’s Associated Press interview discusses the collaboration and its boundaries.

What Anemone is about

The story is set in Northern England. Sean Bean plays a middle-aged man who leaves his suburban home and heads into the woods to find his estranged brother, a hermit played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Their reunion brings them back to a complicated past shaped by events decades earlier. Film at Lincoln Center describes the story as moving toward familial redemption; the film’s premise is fiction, not a claim about the actors’ own family. Film at Lincoln Center’s 63rd New York Film Festival page gives the setting and synopsis.

Daniel Day-Lewis’s return to the screen

Film at Lincoln Center called Daniel Day-Lewis’s part in Anemone his “first screen role in eight years” in its 2025 festival description. That is the festival’s characterization, rather than an independently calculated interval. The AP interview offers a personal reason the project mattered to him: he said it made him reflect on having set acting aside, while the film itself took shape through his work with Ronan.

Daniel has also spoken about the distance between acting and public attention. In the AP interview, he said, “The public aspect of my life I’ve always been baffled by.” The remark helps distinguish his interest in the work from the attention that can accompany a return to screen, without suggesting that he returned for publicity.
