No acting comeback was announced after Daniel Day-Lewis met Steven Spielberg. In March 2024, filmmaker Jim Sheridan said the discussion concerned a possible Joseph Kennedy project, with Day-Lewis considered for an executive-producer role—not an acting part. Sheridan described the idea as undeveloped talk. Day-Lewis’s later return to acting came through the separate 2025 film Anemone, directed by his son Ronan.
What was said about the Spielberg meeting?
A meeting reported in January 2024 among Day-Lewis, Spielberg and Sheridan prompted speculation that Spielberg had persuaded the actor to return. The speculation drew on Day-Lewis and Spielberg’s earlier collaboration on Lincoln. In March, Sheridan clarified that they had discussed reviving a possible project about Joseph Kennedy, the Kennedy family patriarch. His account did not describe an acting offer or an agreement by Day-Lewis to act. The Irish Times reported Sheridan’s clarification; Deadline’s report, hosted by Yahoo, also covered the discussion.
What role was Day-Lewis considered for?
According to Sheridan’s account, Day-Lewis might have been involved as an executive producer on the prospective Joseph Kennedy project, not as an actor. The project had not advanced beyond discussion as reported in 2024. That describes what was said at the time; it does not establish the project’s current status.
How does this fit with his retirement announcement?
In 2017, after Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis announced that he would no longer work as an actor. In a later interview discussed by Variety in 2025, he reflected, “I never intended to retire, really.” He also said, “The work was always something I loved. I never, ever stopped loving the work.” Those remarks offer his later perspective on the retirement announcement; they do not change what Sheridan said about the 2024 meeting. Variety’s 2025 report reproduced the comments.
