The Dancing Pumpkin Man is performer Matt Geiler, whose 2017 America’s Got Talent audition brought his internet-famous Halloween character to the Season 12 stage. He danced to Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”; Simon Cowell buzzed, but Mel B backed the act and Geiler advanced to Judge Cuts. He was eliminated there, before the quarterfinals.
Who is the Dancing Pumpkin Man?
The performer behind the pumpkin mask is Matt Geiler, an actor and comedian. The character began as a quick Halloween bit for KXVO’s 10 p.m. newscast in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2006. Geiler and the station’s small team needed material to fill airtime, so he put on a pumpkin mask and black unitard and danced in front of a green screen.
“Since it was Halloween I thought I could kill a few minutes by putting that costume on and dancing around in front of a green screen,” Geiler later told MEL Magazine.
Station staff uploaded the segment to YouTube. Geiler told MEL that it drew wider attention after a BuzzFeed employee found it in 2009. The KXVO clip is the original Halloween segment; it is not the same performance as his later America’s Got Talent audition.

Geiler auditioned for Season 12 in 2017. On the show, he performed as the pumpkin-headed character to Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me.” E! News reported the song and quoted Geiler describing his aim: “The goal is to spread the joy through the dance and to ascend to a position at the front of the modern Avant garde.”
Simon Cowell buzzed during the audition, while Mel B argued in favor of the act. Contemporary coverage from WOWT and KMTV reported that Geiler advanced after Cowell changed his vote.

Did the Dancing Pumpkin Man win AGT?
No. Geiler made it past the audition and reached Judge Cuts, but he was eliminated before the quarterfinals. A fan-maintained AGT reference page lists Haddaway’s “What Is Love” as the song for his Judge Cuts routine; that song detail is less firmly established than the reported outcome.
Why did the character appear on AGT years later?
Geiler told MEL Magazine in 2019 that he had declined invitations to audition in 2010 and 2012 because he worried the character could define him as an actor. He accepted in 2016 after his professional circumstances changed. Looking back on how the character kept resurfacing, he said: “It just won’t die.”
