In a birthday reflection published on 3 March 2019, Dana Vulin looked back on the seven years since an attack in 2012 left her with third-degree burns to 64 per cent of her body. PerthNow reported that she was celebrating her 33rd birthday that week and quoted her describing a recovery and a life she had once struggled to imagine.
What happened to Dana Vulin?
PerthNow’s 2019 account says Vulin was doused in methylated spirits and set alight in 2012. The attack caused third-degree burns to 64 per cent of her body. The birthday story focused not on retelling the attack in detail, but on how she viewed the years that followed.
How Vulin described her recovery in 2019
PerthNow reproduced excerpts from a Facebook post Vulin wrote around her birthday. She said, “I am so happy at where I am in my life,” and reflected that “The fact that I nearly didn’t make it blows my mind.”
She described the scale of her recovery as something she had not expected: “I could never imagine I would of made one of the biggest recoveries in the world.” That is the wording reported by PerthNow. In the same reflection, she wrote, “Death knocked on my door more than once and I fought it more times than I can count.”

Her account also looked forward. “I’ve travelled, lived and loved,” she wrote, adding that she could not imagine what her future would bring because she was “still waiting to wake up from my dream life instead of the nightmare I lived for years.” These excerpts are attributed to Vulin’s Facebook post as reproduced in PerthNow’s report.
What she was doing at the time
In its March 2019 article, PerthNow reported that Vulin was studying for a master’s degree in science. That is a snapshot from the time of the birthday reflection, not a claim about her current work or education.

A separate PerthNow birthday report in 2022 offered a later update: it said Vulin had completed a master’s degree of science in nursing, was working as a cosmetic nurse, and had opened a clinic in 2021. That report also put the number of her surgeries at more than 200. Those later details belong to the 2022 account and should not be read back into what was known in 2019.
