Dana Carvey used the phrase “pain train” while discussing grief after his son Dex’s death on the January 17, 2024 episode of Fly on the Wall, the podcast he co-hosts with David Spade. The episode documents what Carvey said then; it does not establish how he feels today.
What Dana Carvey meant by “the pain train”
Carvey was describing grief as an uncertain process, not announcing a timetable for recovery. Speaking with Spade, he said: “you don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better.” The excerpt is from a third-party transcript of the January 17 episode; the surrounding conversation concerned his return to the podcast and recovery after his family’s loss. Why he returned to the podcast
Carvey said he had considered coming back over the holidays and that unstructured days could leave him alone with his thoughts. Returning to joke and riff with Spade felt healthy to him, he said. He also described the family’s grief as private and mentioned spending time together, hiking, and going to church. These were his personal reflections, not advice about how other people should grieve. Fox News’ contemporaneous account and The Independent’s report covered his remarks.
Who was Dex Carvey?
Dex Carvey was Dana Carvey and Paula Zwagerman’s son. CBS News reported that Dex died in November 2023 at age 32. CBS also reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined his death was an accidental drug overdose; that attribution is to CBS’s account of the examiner’s finding. CBS News’ report

Does “still” mean Carvey recently gave an update?
No. The “pain train” statement documented in these reports comes from the January 17, 2024 podcast episode. It should not be presented as a current update or evidence that Carvey remains in the same emotional state in 2026.
