The “sinister AF” description is subjective, but it fits the character Singer described: a man who treats the people around him as subjects in an operation—and, in Stevens’s performance, never needs to raise his voice.
What is Cuckoo about?
Hunter Schafer plays Gretchen, a teenager who leaves America to live with her father and his new family in the German Alps. At the resort run by König, she begins hearing strange noises and experiencing bloody visions. As the unease grows, Gretchen discovers a secret connected to her family.
The film’s official synopsis keeps the mystery broad; that is part of the setup, so the details are best left there unless you want spoilers. Cuckoo was written and directed by Tilman Singer, with Stevens and Schafer among its cast.
Why does Dan Stevens seem so menacing?
For Singer, König’s menace comes from how he regards other people. In a Fangoria interview, the director said: “He sees everybody as a subject in his grand experiment or operation, the thing that he needs to do.” That outlook makes König’s interest in Gretchen’s family feel less like ordinary hospitality and more like control.

Singer also recalled that he and Stevens chose restraint over an openly explosive performance. “In the script, he was yelling at the end, and Dan said, ‘No, this guy never yells. He should never yell.’” The result, as Singer described the choice, is a character whose composure can make his authority feel more unsettling than a shouted threat.
How did the cuckoo bird inspire the film?
Singer traced the premise to the cuckoo bird’s use of other birds’ nests to raise its young. He said the behavior struck him as both horrifying and strangely beautiful: the host birds continue feeding the cuckoo chick. “At some point, I was thinking all right, how does this go with humans? What do I do with it?” he told Creepy Kingdom.

That origin offers a way into the film’s themes without reducing its story to a single allegory. The director has also described approaching horror through the emotional structure he wants an audience to feel: “I start with feelings first.”
What else shapes the film’s atmosphere?
Singer described a visual contrast between a glass family house, a dusty older hotel and a clinical institutional setting. Most of the film was shot on location, he said, while the Lover’s Nest interior was built in a warehouse. Stevens, in a separate interview, characterized the Alps setting as having a fairy-tale quality.

Singer also discussed the creature’s appearance as haunting and human rather than conventionally monstrous, citing an old-fashioned beauty standard and Audrey Hepburn’s look in Charade as influences. Those are the director’s design references, not a claim that Stevens created the creature’s look.
