Levy wrote, directed, produced and stars in the 2024 film, which follows a widower and his friends as they navigate loss, intimacy and the next stage of life.
What is Dan Levy’s Netflix movie?
Good Grief is a feature film written, directed and produced by Dan Levy, who also plays its lead character, Marc. Netflix’s January 5, 2024 feature describes it as a story about grief, love and friendship.
What is Good Grief about?
Marc is a widower whose husband, Oliver, has died. With two close friends, Marc travels to Paris, where the trip becomes part of his effort to reckon with loss and imagine life beyond it. The film’s starting point was personal: Levy told Netflix he began developing the idea after his grandmother died, wondering, “What does it all mean and is there a correct way to grieve someone?”
Levy has described the movie as more invested in life than death. As quoted by Netflix, he said, “There’s such joy in this movie, it has much more to do with life than death which is why the movie starts with a death but doesn’t end with one.” That framing makes the story less a mystery to solve than a portrait of people trying to carry grief while continuing to live.

How does Good Grief approach love and friendship?

That perspective is relevant to the title’s mention of dating, but the available descriptions do not establish dating as the movie’s main subject. Its focus is broader: how love persists through friendship, memory and the difficult work of moving forward after bereavement.
