When she said in 2024 that she felt more ready to return, she was describing how her perspective had changed with age and experience—not announcing a new decision or a start date for filming. Lucasfilm says the untitled film takes place after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and follows Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.
Is Daisy Ridley coming back as Rey?
Yes. Lucasfilm announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe on April 7, 2023, that Ridley would reprise Rey in a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The project was one of three live-action films announced at the event. Lucasfilm’s announcement describes the story as taking place after The Rise of Skywalker and focusing on Rey building a new Jedi Order.
Lucasfilm’s event coverage places the story 15 years after Episode IX. That is the film’s fictional timeline, not a real-world measure of how long production has taken. At the event, Ridley said, “My heart is pounding. I’m very thrilled to be continuing this journey.”
What did Ridley mean by feeling ready?
In an Empire interview reported by Gizmodo on April 9, 2024, Ridley reflected on how returning would feel different from playing Rey the first time. “I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now,” she said. She added that she had not felt like an adult then, and that her personal life and professional experience had changed since.

Her comments describe a more mature perspective, not a claim that she had lacked commitment to the earlier films. Ridley also made clear that she was enthusiastic about the new project: “Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.” She said she did not accept immediately; Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told her to take as long as she needed. Gizmodo’s report attributes these remarks to Ridley’s Empire interview.
What is the new Rey film about?
The confirmed story focus is Rey building a new Jedi Order after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm’s character summary describes Rey as a scavenger from Jakku who discovers her connection to the Force, seeks Luke Skywalker’s training, and confronts Palpatine. The announced film moves her story beyond that conflict toward the work of establishing a new generation of Jedi.

Beyond that premise, the announcement does not provide a detailed plot or explain who else will appear. It identifies Obaid-Chinoy as director and Ridley as Rey; further story details should not be treated as confirmed unless Lucasfilm announces them.
Is there a release date or production update?
The cited Lucasfilm announcement does not give a release date or specify the film’s current production stage. Gizmodo’s 2024 report said there was no script at the time of Ridley’s interview, but that is a dated observation, not evidence of the project’s status today. Neither the 2023 announcement nor the 2024 interview establishes when the film will be released or whether filming has begun.

Where does Star Wars: Legacy fit?
Lucasfilm has also announced Star Wars: Legacy by Madeleine Roux, a Rey-and-Leia novel set between Episodes VIII and IX and scheduled for July 28, 2026, according to the publisher’s listing. It is a separate story set before the announced film, not a continuation of Rey’s post-Rise of Skywalker journey on screen.
