Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Dahaad is most compelling when its investigation closes in on a killer—but, in Scroll’s reading, its most magnetic character is the suspect himself. That tension gives the crime thriller its hook and its weakness: Anand can dominate the story even as the women he is suspected of killing risk becoming less fully drawn than the investigation demands.
What is Dahaad about?
Dahaad is an eight-episode crime, drama and mystery series released on 12 May 2023. Its story follows sub-inspector Anjali Bhaati and colleagues at Mandawa Police Station as they investigate women found dead in public toilets. The deaths initially look like suicides, but the circumstances lead Anjali to suspect a serial killer. Prime Video’s Season 1 listing identifies the series as an eight-episode season; Excel Entertainment lists Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar as creators and showrunners, with Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi as directors.
The principal cast includes Sonakshi Sinha as Anjali, Vijay Varma as Anand, Gulshan Devaiah and Sohum Shah. The premise sets up a police procedural, but the series’ centre of gravity is less straightforward than its synopsis suggests.
Why does the suspect feel like the real hero?
“Real hero” here describes narrative prominence, not moral virtue. In her review for Scroll, Nandini Ramnath argues that “One character towers over the rest – not the righteous Anjali, not her accommodating boss Devi Singh, not the conflicted Kailash.” She calls Anand, played by Varma, “beguilingly played” and says he “occupies centre stage in a show that is supposedly about women who have died mercilessly and needlessly.”

That is the review’s sharpest criticism and the series’ most interesting contradiction. A suspense story can draw viewers toward the suspected killer: his choices and concealment generate questions, while the officers’ pursuit creates momentum. But when the perpetrator attracts more attention than the victims, the people at the heart of the crimes may become plot devices rather than characters. Ramnath finds that imbalance consequential, not merely a matter of screen time.
How well does the investigation work?
Ramnath finds the series most alive when Anjali and her colleagues are closing in on the killer. The Times of India likewise emphasizes the cat-and-mouse dynamic between an experienced criminal and an underdog officer. These readings point to the show’s strongest source of tension: the pursuit gives the episodes a clear forward drive, and the gap between what the police know and what the suspect hides sustains suspense.

That momentum does not amount to universal praise. The Indian Express appreciates the atmosphere but criticizes repetition and aspects of the writing, including the development of Varma’s character. The result is a mixed critical picture: the investigation can engage, while the pacing and the balance among characters leave room for frustration.
Do Anjali and the victims get enough depth?
Ramnath’s critique is not that Anjali lacks a strong position in the story; it is that the series does not always use that position to deepen her characterization. She points to Anjali’s insensitivity toward a woman who may become a victim as a moment that could have revealed more about the officer, but argues that the show lets the opportunity pass.

She also questions how the victims are portrayed. That concern matters especially in a thriller whose premise is the repeated killing of women: if their lives remain indistinct, the suspense risks centring the person responsible for their deaths more than the people who died. Viewers looking for a procedural that gives equal weight to victims, investigators and suspect may find the balance uneven.
Does the eight-episode format suit Dahaad?
Prime Video lists Season 1 as eight episodes. Ramnath questions whether the story and its themes benefit from that length, suggesting the material might have worked better as a film. The Indian Express’s criticism of repetition offers a different but related concern about pacing. These are critical judgments rather than a settled verdict on the format: viewers who enjoy a slower, extended pursuit may value the room for atmosphere, while those who want a tightly compressed mystery may find the season overextended.

Is Dahaad worth watching?
Dahaad is worth considering if a tense investigation and a morally unsettling suspect are more important to you than a consistently balanced ensemble. Its cat-and-mouse structure has clear appeal, and Varma’s Anand is the character Ramnath finds most arresting. But the same emphasis raises an uncomfortable question about whose story the thriller ultimately tells. The series is less satisfying if you expect its victims and lead investigator to receive as much careful attention as the suspected killer.
