Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. The finale teases Daeron Targaryen through a brief shot of his blue dragon, Tessarion, flying with the Hightower army. It does not give viewers a clear on-screen introduction to Daeron himself. Earlier in the season, the show establishes that Alicent’s youngest son was raised in Oldtown; Gwayne describes him as kind.
Who is Daeron Targaryen?
Daeron is Alicent Hightower’s youngest son and the brother of Aegon, Aemond and Helaena. Unlike his siblings, he has been raised away from King’s Landing, in Oldtown. In Season 2, Alicent asks her brother Gwayne about him, and Gwayne calls Daeron “kind.” That is Gwayne’s description in the show, not an objective verdict from the story’s narrator.
Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, told TIME that Daeron’s mention was deliberate: “It’s not a flippant mention. He’s mentioned for a reason in this season, for sure.” Cooke interpreted the exchange as part of Alicent’s reflection on how her children have turned out and whether their behavior comes from their upbringing, their mother or their own nature.
What does the Season 2 finale show?
In “The Queen Who Ever Was,” the closing montage shows forces preparing for the conflict ahead. One brief shot features a blue dragon flying with the Hightower army. Finale director Geeta Vasant Patel identified the dragon as Tessarion, Daeron’s dragon, in her ELLE interview.

The shot connects Daeron to the forces gathering for the coming war, but it is not a face-to-face introduction. The distinction matters: the finale names Daeron earlier, shows his dragon later, and does not clearly present Daeron himself to the audience.
Why does the finale end with a tease?
Patel described the finale as “rising action,” saying the discussion with showrunner Ryan Condal was that the episode needed to build toward what comes next. She also said the creative emphasis was on story and character after the action-oriented seventh episode. Her comments describe the finale’s overall approach; they do not give a specific reason for withholding a clear view of Daeron.

The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, according to HBO’s official series materials. The book offers broader Targaryen history, but it is not required to understand the television clue: the finale uses Tessarion to signal Daeron’s connection to the Hightower forces.

A GamesRadar+ recap of the Season 3 premiere reports that Tessarion appears with Ormund Hightower’s forces while Daeron himself remains unseen onscreen. That describes the premiere only; it should not be treated as a status report for every later Season 3 episode.
