He hesitated before accepting, then embraced studio baron Srikant Roy as a tribute to the greats of Indian cinema, including his idol Guru Dutt. His recollections below are excerpted with permission from Beyond the Spotlight – Unforgettable Stories from Between Takes, written by Chatterjee with Roshmila Bhattacharya.
Why Chatterjee considered Jubilee
After decades working in film and television, Chatterjee says he was ready to explore OTT, but he was not actively looking for a web series. Motwane approached him with a period drama for Amazon Prime Video: Jubilee, in which Chatterjee would play Srikant Roy, a film studio baron.
Chatterjee recalls that he did not accept straight away. Motwane told him the character had been written with him in mind, pointing to his performances in Chokher Bali and Autograph. That casting explanation is part of Chatterjee’s account of the conversation.
Seeing Srikant Roy as a tribute
What eventually drew Chatterjee to the part was his sense of what Roy represented. He saw the character as a tribute to the greats of Indian cinema, among them Guru Dutt, whom he describes as an idol. The connection was personal: Chatterjee approached Roy not simply as a studio executive in a period drama, but as a man deeply immersed in cinema.

Workshops, preparation and “first bencher”
Chatterjee recalls attending workshops and returning to Mumbai to prepare. He paid close attention to conversations during the process; when he later remembered details from earlier discussions, the director and his co-stars teased him by calling him “first bencher.”
He also says he often checked with Motwane to see whether his performance was working. In Chatterjee’s recollection, the director reassured him: “Dada, you are Roy!”

How he built his interpretation of Roy
Chatterjee describes Roy as someone who lives and breathes cinema. In shaping the role, he reflected on earlier characters he had played and drew on those experiences as part of his performance. These are his observations about the work of inhabiting Roy, rather than claims about a single prescribed method or an independently documented production process.
