Cynthia Erivo says she was drawn to playing the Blue Fairy in Disney’s 2022 Pinocchio by Robert Zemeckis’s vision: a character who could be kind and warm yet practical, with an edge. In a Hype Malaysia interview published September 9, 2022, Erivo also discussed the Fairy’s role in Pinocchio’s story, her whimsical look, and why she sang live on set.
How Cynthia Erivo came to play the Blue Fairy
Erivo said her agent told her that director Robert Zemeckis wanted to speak with her about playing the Blue Fairy. She liked the way he imagined the character. Zemeckis, as Erivo described his direction, wanted a blend of qualities rather than a purely gentle, distant fairy: kindness and sweetness alongside practicality and pragmatism, warmth, and an edge. What did Cynthia Erivo say about the Blue Fairy?
Erivo described the character as a guide who helps Pinocchio learn honesty and as the figure who tries to grant Geppetto’s wish. She put the first part this way: “The Blue Fairy’s role is to help to shepherd Pinocchio into learning about what honesty looks like.” She also said, “She tries to grant the wish that he Geppetto wants.”
Erivo connected the story more broadly with truthfulness, being true to oneself, taking responsibility for mistakes, and second chances. That is her interpretation of the film’s themes, rather than the only possible reading of the story.

Why the Blue Fairy looks whimsical and otherworldly
The design kept the character’s recognizable blue while aiming for a magical, otherworldly effect. “We wanted her to feel sort of whimsical and otherworldly,” Erivo said. She added, “We still wanted to keep the blue, but we wanted to make it feel magical all the way around in everything from the make up to the hair.”
In her account of the look, crystals appeared in her hair and on her ears. She said she kept some of her piercings, with replacement earrings made by the costume designer, and wore a dress constructed from layers of silk. These are Erivo’s recollections of the design and filming, not independently verified production records.
