Chicago artist Cynthia Albritton, known as Cynthia Plaster Caster, died in Chicago on April 21, 2022, at age 74, according to the Los Angeles Times. The report said she had an undisclosed illness. Her best-known work was a series of casts of rock musicians, a project she began in 1968 and later described as developing into a Pop Art form.
Who was Cynthia Plaster Caster?
Albritton was a Chicago artist who adopted the professional name Cynthia Plaster Caster. The Los Angeles Times reported that she began making casts of musicians in 1968 while studying art. Jimi Hendrix was her first celebrity subject, according to the newspaper.
The work became her best-known artistic project, but it was not limited to musicians. The Los Angeles Times also reported that her subjects included artists from outside the music world.
How did her casting project develop?
Albritton resumed casting in the 1980s after a hiatus. In 2000, she held her first exhibition of the casts in New York, the Los Angeles Times reported. In a 1993 interview with the paper, she reflected on the project’s changing purpose: “What started out as a way to meet rock bands ended up turning into a Pop Art form.”

How has her work been interpreted?
Albritton’s casts sit at the intersection of celebrity culture and art.
