What happened during the duet?
Lauper was performing her 1983 song when Smith joined her onstage. Accounts differ on the precise moment he entered: NME says he appeared during the second verse, while The Manhattan Beat’s October 2024 account says Lauper sang the first verse before introducing him. Both describe the two artists singing together, but the exact staging should not be treated as settled from those accounts alone.
Coverage described them holding hands as they sang. The Manhattan Beat also reported that they slow-danced during the instrumental break. Forbes’ concert coverage noted fans’ phone lights across the darkened arena.

How does the MSG performance connect to Sam Smith’s earlier cover?
Smith had recorded “Time After Time” before the Madison Square Garden appearance. The song appears on Love Goes: Live At Abbey Road Studios, a live album release announced by Universal Music Canada on March 19, 2021. The label called it “an inimitable cover” of Lauper’s song and listed a vinyl version of the album.
The two performances have different contexts: Smith’s earlier version was a released track from a live Abbey Road studio session, while the MSG version was a guest duet during Lauper’s 2024 arena tour. Universal Music Canada’s announcement provides the album and track details; it does not establish current retail availability.
