Cuttputlli has a workable mystery and a promising premise, but its investigation rarely develops the tension its subject demands. The 2022 Hindi thriller gives Akshay Kumar a restrained rookie-cop role; its detours into romance and family drama, thin character relationships and hurried reveal leave the story feeling more clinical than gripping.
What is Cuttputlli about?
Directed by Ranjit M. Tewari, Cuttputlli follows Arjan Sethi (Akshay Kumar), an aspiring filmmaker who joins the police. When teenage girls go missing and are murdered around Parwanoo and Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, his interest in serial-killer stories becomes relevant to the case. The mystery turns on spotting a pattern and identifying who is responsible; this review avoids revealing the killer’s identity.
The film is a remake of the 2018 Tamil thriller Ratsasan, a connection noted by both The Indian Express and Hindustan Times. Hindustan Times calls it a “frame-by-frame remake”; that is the reviewer’s characterization, rather than an independently verified comparison here.
Does the mystery build suspense?
The case provides a clear engine for a thriller: disappearances, murders and an investigator trying to connect the clues. But the film often steps away from that engine for romance and family material. Those passages do little to deepen the relationships, so they interrupt the investigation without giving the characters much emotional weight in return.

The two published reviews differ in emphasis. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express argues that tension dissipates early as family drama, romance and a clunky police procedural take over, and calls the ending perfunctory. Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times also finds the story predictable and the final killer sequence rushed, but says the screenplay and unfolding mystery can keep viewers wondering what happens next. These are two critics’ assessments, not a broad consensus.
How do the performances and characters fare?
Hindustan Times finds Kumar’s performance restrained and watchful, a fit for a cop trying to read a disturbing case rather than dominate it. The review also singles out Sargun Mehta’s presence as SHO Parmar, Arjan’s senior officer. Rakul Preet Singh plays Divya, a schoolteacher and Arjan’s love interest, but both reviews criticize how little the film does with her character. The Indian Express likewise finds the character dynamics thin.

That underdevelopment matters most when the story reaches its explanation. The killer’s reveal is meant to give the investigation its emotional and dramatic payoff, yet the rushed sequence leaves little room to understand the character behind the crimes. The result is a mystery that can hold attention as a puzzle without making its conclusion feel fully earned.
Is Cuttputlli worth watching?
It may suit viewers who enjoy following clues in a serial-killer mystery and are willing to accept familiar turns. It is less satisfying if the appeal is mounting suspense, convincing character relationships or a carefully paced climax. Gupta’s Indian Express review gave the film 1 out of 5 and summarized her judgment this way: “Nothing about this thriller, which lacks thrills, works the way it should.” Kukreja’s more mixed Hindustan Times review preserves a case for its engaging mystery and Kumar’s performance, even as it flags predictability and a rushed climax.

CBFC Watch’s archive records a Hindi UA certification dated August 23, 2022, and lists modifications including replacement of graphic torture and killing imagery, deletion of a sexually suggestive teacher-student scene, and removal of dialogue it describes as apathetic toward the disabled community. These are the archive’s summaries; the record points readers to the original E-Cinepramaan entry for precise regulator wording. The listed edits do not establish which version is available on any particular streaming service.

A Disney+ listing also surfaced, but opening it redirected to the apps landing page; check the catalog for your region rather than assuming the title is currently available.
